Roker Pier

Did it this morning and it was brilliant! It lasted 90 minutes but the time flew over. You meet at the glass hut on the end of the pier and get kitted out with a hard hat and torches. You walk along the tunnel with stops to hear bits of history, then arrive in the basement of the lighthouse. You work your way up with stops and commentary on each floor, then walk back down and back along the pier. Learned so much about the piers and lighthouse and it was really interesting seeing inside.

I would wear hiking boots or wellies as the water does come into the tunnel and there were puddles to walk through. It's quite uneven in the tunnel and you need to be fit enough to climb up ladder like staircases in the lighthouse.

They're looking for volunteer guides if anyone is interested. The more volunteers, the more tours they can run.

It’s absolutely class. People so willing to knock Sunderland, and we’ve got this beautiful piece of engineering sitting there. Love it.

Doing this today.

Doing this today.
Didn’t realise it was back open. Been wanting to do this for ages. Anybody who’s done it, will it be ok for a 5yr old?

Want to do the Penshaw Monument one too.

As long as they're ok in darkened tunnels and can manage climbing steps that are steep like a ladder, they'll be fine.
