Rodwell

People saying he's scared of the ball confuse me. He's really comfortable on the ball with both feet. Able to take it under pressure and make himself a yard of space. He's also the only midfielder who even attempts to get into the box from our regular midfield.
He's probably the 4th most creative player we have in the squad (says a lot about the squad). He's not a hard tackler and I think due to his injuries he's wary of getting stuck in. But his positioning in the pitch is usually sound.
Also remember Pickford picked him out of the entire squad to be in his 5 aside team and said he had everything. Unless this was just a huge in joke.
Massive season for him this one but I can see him being our man in the hole once lens leaves.

I can see what you're saying, especially about last season, but Rodwell is quite a particular case.

He's perfected the art of cowardly footballer so well that it is easy to miss how damaging he is to have in the team. When Borini didn't put a shift it, it was blindingly obvious, and he got the abuse that he deserved. Rodwell, though always looks busy - but usually busy getting himself into positions away from the ball, because he's shit scared of the thing. That means he stays close to opposition players (so he's not on for the pass) when he should be looking for space, and goes into the space (away from the ball, looking around, pointing) when he should be getting close, to keep things tight, be ready to intercept, etc. It has happened for so long now that his positioning can't possibly be coincidental. Might be stretching it a bit, but to me this all means that he's actually more dangerous to the potential of the team than actually playing with ten men. At least then you know that there's a hole to fill and can organise appropriately.

The man made his first team debut ten years ago. He's never going to come good, and for me his involvement (or not) will say far more about Grayson's ability to suss a player than anything Rodwell might do on the pitch. It was great when Kirchoff clocked what he was doing a few times last season and absolutely bollocked him for not being where he should be. I hope Grayson has the same eyes.

If we are stuck with him, I just hope he doesn't play.
What I’ve been saying for years.

if he is good at 5 aside that would make sense, no big tackles flying in , less space to run about and get injured

could well have great technique but you need to be able to do it in games otherwise its irrelevant.

He's contracted until 30th June 2019 and assuming the rumours are true, that he’s on £65k a week, it’d cost somebody £6.5m over 2 years to even just take over the contract without a transfer fee. Not gonna happen imo.
This. Who else in their right mind would want the cowardly sack of shit.

He would want his contract payed up if we gave him a free transfer.
That's 7.28M in wages 2 years left & 4M to Man C......11.28M total just not happening this year....stuck with him this year at least next Summer will be a realistic chance to sell him I personally hope he does well in the Championship helps us & helps our pocket book next summer...

Not sure he's anywhere near as bad as whats made out on here. I've seen far, far worse play for Sunderland than Rodwell.

He's obviously not the player we thought we were getting but people are a tad dramatic in describing how bad he is, he'll do alright in the championship imo.

Prepare for disappointment. Lauding his occasional good ten minute spells will not change anything either.

Pound for pound he's the worst value by miles. By the time he leaves the club he will have cost over £26 million in salary and transfer fee (more if he received any signing on fee,?) In that time he won't have had one single good performance for us.

A lad that played 38 games without once being on the winning side, a lad who played 2 back to back games, over 180 minutes of football and failed to attempt one single tackle in either game, the 2nd of which was away to the mags in the 1.1 draw.

It's not overstated on here how bad he is. He sometimes looks brilliant for about 15 - 20 minutes and then he vanishes, hides, goes to sleep or all three. He has none of the mental attributes necessary for the championship.

Nah he's nowhere near that bad. He's had more than a few decent games for us and maybe he should just go around kicking people picking up cards maybe that would appease people for paying 10 million quid.

Thing is he will be training really hard to impress simon or wait he's injurd perfect excuse and by the time simon realises he's not up to the task the window will be firmly shut.

I know it won't happen but knowing that the club are in such a financial mess & that his team-mates have taken a pay cut wouldn't it be a nice gesture of commitment to the club if he asked to take the same hit on his wages.

I doubt that he would miss it.

The situation he is in might even cause unrest in the dressing room who knows.

It would be good for him to give us something back as he has hardly been value for money.
I've never advocated giving players abuse, but if he is ever fit enough to be on the pitch and he starts his usual hide n seek performance, then he deserves to be reminded of how much he is bleeding the club of and how many people have lost their jobs since relegation. If he's just shite and getting stuck in then fair enough as he did force us to give him that deal.
