Rodwell

Last week against Man Utd Rodwell looked half asleep. Mvila had a right go at him just before the final whistle for not reacting to win a second ball.

Today he looked sharp and interested and was a bit unlucky. I am hoping that finally with the right influences around him, taking him to task and demanding more from him, he will turn a corner and be a decent player for us.

Take it from me you are laying yourself open after making such an outrageous post

I just have. He got to the second shot before the defender and sky'd it.
Didn't the defender deflected it over the bar. Anyway how often do you see our midfield players in those positions? You need to be there to get those chances. Don't know why you can't see it! Or maybe you do but can't admit that maybe rodwell is a good player after all.

Have a feeling Sam hasn't totally given up hope

At the moment not as much as we paid for him on his number of appearances. But then again it's down to injury and not the quality of his performances that he have limited his starts for the team.

Sam can spot a good player January window purchases confirms that.

It's not his fault he cost as much as we paid for him

Totally agree with this. What I am saying is that if he was worth the initial outlay, then he is worth investing in to try and get a return on it; hopefully by way of decent performances.

You could say the same for any player whatever their price of course but you can't help but expect more when they come so highly priced, worth it or not. Success is never guaranteed I grant you.

The new Jozy

Agree Janey. And from a personal perspective Im not saying Rodwell should be a regular BUT if BSA is going to persist with this formation ie Catts playing a more forward role, Rodwell is the better of two evils. He is better then catts playing that role

But the Rodwell haters will not have this

Who are the Rodwell haters? Are you talking about people who have watched him do fuck all for 18 months?

Sorry but I don't agree. Each has their own strengths, for a start Kirchhoff is not as fast and mobile as Rodwell. Rodwell is an attacking midfielder Kirchhoff is defensive. Mental strength comes from playing games and keeping fit. The more consecutive games you play the more confidence you get. Look at Leicester for example they haven't got the quality of squad as man city, Arsenal, etc but because they have used only a small squad of players this season their confidence as individual players is tremendous.

What are Rodwells strengths?

miss one of those chances, fair enough it happens. but after missing the first he should have made no mistake with the second. don't think he was decisive enough (for either) or showed enough desire the bury the second.

I think Allardyce is persevering with Rodwell because potentially he gives us something none of our other midfield options do. Rodwell proved in his cameo yesterday that he can run with the ball and create chances - sadly most of the chances he helped to make, fell to himself !

However this season pans out we'll need to address the lack of creativity in our midfield.

Catts, M'Villa and Kirchoff are all best suited to playing just in front of the defence and can all do that job well but we desperately need someone to excel at the more creative, attacking midfield role.
