He averages over 40 in the 40 or 50 over stuff which is excellent by any stretch. Times the ball beautifully and can be brutal on the short ball. Yet in 20/20 his record is catastrophic to the extent they were pushing him down the order to find a solution.

To me there is nothing stopping him being a top player in the shortest form of the game but he never seems to produce. Any views as to why?

The 50 over game suits him better as it does Durham in general. I think it allows him to play in a normal orthodox attacking mode which he has done in the championship for the past 3 years with good results . In t20 more slogs are required and unorthodox power hitting, which is not really his game. What he does need to learn is once he has been in for the first 15/20 overs he needs to see us through to the end of the innings. Today if he or Colly had have been there at the end there would not have been that collapse and Durham would have scored 40/50 more runs. The lad is a quality batsmen.

Aye - Good post. This bit is particularly true but in fairness to him he has come on enormously in the last 2 years from turning 30s and 40s into bigger scores. When he is in there are few players in the country who are better to watch in terms of timing a cricket ball.

He has improved hugely in that time. I for one thought he was going to be another young Durham batsman who looked good but was not able to score enough runs to make an impact, thankfully he has proved me wrong.

interesting thoughts lads. i like the lad and hope hed continues like this in the semi

I honestly think he would have gone onto great things if he wasn't playing for Durham. The wicket is great for exciting cricket, but not for up and coming opening batsmen. IMO if he played at somewhere like Taunton every other week he would get 1000+ runs every year!

England could do a lot worse than him. He is head and shoulders above Robson, and would be a massive improvement in Cook for the 50 over stuff. Aggressive opening batsman but still with a bit of technique to back it up.

Be Lyth or Hales next in I'd imgaine.

Been talking a member of the Notts committee who reckons that Rocky has been spoken about as a 50 over opener but while Cook wants to play he'll be allowed to do so.

Hales' form demanded that he get first shot.

As long as he produces in the Cup and the Championship I really couldn't care. Don't think being good at t20 is necesarily important nor will it ever be so no need to panic there.
