RLB and Subs

bout time the powers that be did away with the 5 or whatever subs lark, for me it's a main component for ruining the bloody game
When aa were a lad a sub only came on if someone was injured. Stokoe famously said after the cup final that he could see the players were knackered but didn’t want to use his (one) sub in case it upset the balance of the team!😀

Also back then a sub was ready with his kit on and his boots laced.

These days play is paused while the sub changes his gear, ties his shoes etc. I’d be happy to see the back of all that and don’t get me started on these ridiculous 88th minute subs. Of course all that timewasting would be done away with at a stroke if they had a game clock like in US sports. Something I’ve been advocating on here for years.

true enough what you're saying, personally think it's a disgrace supporters paying good money to see most games wrecked and watered down with bloody substitutions

He's still better than the alternatives.

And months and months is a gross exaggeration.

He's looked a bit out of sorts for a few weeks - probably since he picked that knock up - and that's about it.
Not for me. His last goals and assists were in December. Months and months ago. He’s not really contributing to clean sheets or making us solid either.

On current form there’s nothing between him and Browne.

Watch him last night and he’s playing the game at walking pace. Looks miles off it.

He’s built like a man but he’s a 19 year old, A lot of his fatigue will be mental as well as physical. Time spent on the bench is just as valuable to watch and learn as Rigg demonstrated last night. The one time Jobe was benched last season, he came on and within 5 minutes stuck one in the top corner. I get why they are playing him every minute, but the balance is wrong in my opinion.

Just a quick look at some player stats over the season (League only)

Aleksic - 4 appearances
Poveda - 6 appearances
Aouchiche - 8 appereances
Hjelde - 10 appearances
Anderson, Ba, Bennette - 0 apperances
Jones - 1 appearance

Combined total of 6 starts between those.

Haven't counted Browne and Samed due to injuries.
Aleksic - arrived barely speaking English from a very poor standard league. Remember it took a season to see Hume and he speaks English.

Poveda - has basically been injured or had attitude problems since he arrived. Never found fitness

Aouchiche - we have several better players than him until they all got injured and he did okay during our worst period of form. Manager doesn't rate him and I'm pretty sure he sold him at his last club.

Hjelde - 90% of this board didn't want him in the squad at the start of the season let alone starting games or coming in as a fullback certainly won't play cb unless three of our preferred cbs are injured at once.

The rest just simply aren't good enough.

RLB doesn't make subs and had the lowest amount in the French league but the problem isn't the lack of subs it's the lack of quality on the bench. There's not one player in that list I'd think "oh they are a good option to bring on".

Like I said earlier in the thread, there is no one there I largely rate (Although I think Aouchiche is talented and Aleksic looks promising), but giving 10 minutes here and there to

1. Disrupt the flow of a game if we are defending a lead
2. Give fresh legs in games where players a clearly flagging with tiredness
3. Rest our more important players

Surely there is some use in doing this? There's no car crash players on that list for all Ba wasn't fantastic for us, you can't tell me he couldn't have offered something off the bench for small cameos, same with Bennette.

I think throwing on a player that's not as good as who he is replacing just for fresh legs isn't the best idea. Did he do this with Adil who then gave away the free kick thag cost us points? Can't remember who it was against now mind.

Bennette apparently had a bit of an attitude problem and honestly didn't look good enough in the u21s.

It is frustrating like watching other teams change things up and we persist, and I can see the argument that we've dropped so many points in the last 15 minutes of games the most obvious thing is the lack of subs. For me we don't have a good enough squad and that's part of why RLB isn't using them.
