Fair enough..

A shame it's ended up with the lad dead.

But his mother is now trying to use the "race card" and blaming the police for not doing enough, just because he was black.

Not sure why BBC/other media have done that interview to be honest. Other than to get an accusation the police were racist there seems to be no other reason to hold an interview so soon in that style, unless they genuinely believe grilling a grieving mother on whether her son took his own life is a good idea. I'm sure she is absolutely devastated and searching for answers but it doesn't sit right watching her questioned like that at her most vulnerable.

Maybe she wanted to be interviewed

she may well have but i think the media should be more sensitive and offer more support rather than looking for soundbites. The angle could have been more to tell us what a great son he was etc. plenty of time for recriminations later

Seemed incredibly strange to take place so soon....

Amazing how many suicides since have gone unreported. Even priti Patel has jumped in on twitter.

Media f***ing circus.

Your posts are consistently good and well thought out. Whenever I have heard the poor lad's mother on the media she has come across as intelligent, quite articulate and considered in her views. I think she may have a point. RIP to the lad, who appeared to be a nice kid.

When the search got underway over a week ago, his mother was on CH4 expressing concerns and saying she thought the police hadn't taken his disappearance seriously enough.

Coming so soon after the Sarah Everard case and with racial inequalities an ongoing topic of concern, it's only natural to draw comparisons and it's also understandable if people consider the difference in response to be revealing.

This.

It's sad and an awful thing to have happened to the lad himself and his family, but why is this newsworthy? And by that I mean national news?

This exact kind of story plays out up and down the country all the time. I might be way off but I get the feeling this was as a response to the girl who went missing beforehand.
