Retirement

One for the retirees - did you take any advice on how to drawdown and how much etc .
The missus (no) is hoping to retire in March , was just gonna use the 4% rule but unsure if should get advice about how best drawdown how it works etc and amounts could probably take
I will then start looking at when I can probably go, there’s no chance I’m working until 60.
The one thing we’re all running out of is time and you only get so many years while still active and healthy
Speak to ya ifa he will run it through a routine and factor in stuff.like market crashes etc and he estimate how long ya lot will last you.
Eg
Mine said I’d run out when I’m 100 but it could be 90 if we have a total market crash.

You will still have a state pension then.
You will be a dirty old Man if you live to 90 mind in more ways than one.🤣

Yeah what he meant is I will only have me state pension after me pot runs out but that’s assuming I’m spending what I do now which I can’t see being the case.
I hope I’m gone before then man. We’re not designed to live that long.

Definitely Mate and that old saying you can’t take it with you.
If you were 90 I reckon a state pension could support your mobility scooter charge.😩

I put my own spreadsheet together and should be fine.🙏🤞
Need to enjoy every day as we never know what is around the corner. As my Mate always tells me. We will always have a worry box of some degree and he is spot on.

If you don't take a 25% lumper I think you can drawdown about £16,760 a year tax free.

Me dad always used to say “if a kannitt takk it withus them I’m not gannin” ………. Eye dad that went well mate.
It’s 3 years for him in October.
Its a big step me best mate who was 100% retiring this year for the last 2-3 years has decided to go 2 days a week …………… just to lead me in. There’s always gonna be some reason why not to do it mate.

I keep saying it but I’m hearing of too many people my age and a bit older either not making it at all or not making it in the manner they’d hoped.

Even on days like yesterday when all I did was practise with me new coffee machine and only left the house for food and more beans I’m happy knowing I didn’t have to do any work.

No one is promised a tomorrow mate ……………………………. No one !!

Even on days like yesterday when all I did was go and see my Mam, did my food shopping, went for a little walk and got drenched I’m happy knowing I didn’t have to do any work.

Good luck to you Mate.
Job was slowly killing me and don’t miss the pressure and stress.
Never rule out a part time job either and all about options. I landed a part time job out the blue and it’s beer and football money and involved with a hobby, fishing.

It’s the funerals and people you knew going that hits it home. They never had the choices of spending that money that they accrued.
Exactly that Mate with the coffee machine. Before you would be stressing over the next job and time putting pressure on you. Now just fart about with doing it properly and enjoying it.
I never read my fishing stove instructions and set the living room rug alight 🤣
Spent considerable time trying to hide the singe marks from the Ayatollah when She came home. First thing was, “ What’s that burning smell?” Guilty as found and the rug is no more. You bloody enjoy it Mate and if I was close I would want a coffee from that machine 🤣🤣

Yes.
If myself and brother in law are examples, I semi retired ages ago and and am just now recovering from a random chronic illness which are one point gave me 40 symptoms!! My BIL and sister were 'enjoying' their jobs so much,.despite building wealth that they weren't going to pack in. I was telling them they were mad. One health scare later and they are both early retired..
Having worked in the ambulance service and primary care for nearly 35 yrs I’ve seen so May people working hard, enjoying work, reasonable comfort and then something pulls the rug from under their feet and they are either dragging a leg, chronic illness and are too buggered to enjoy their wealth . My motivation to retire and return are these stories. 2 days per week now, Ive built up a few hours so I’m now week 3 into a month off and feel so much better. Currently in Brittany eating well, walking miles with the wife and dog spending some of the lumper.
I’ll probably have to work a bit longer due to the penalty of taking the pension at 53 but at least I’m in good health currently to enjoy the time off because it’s likely that those years on shift work will take its toll.
Our kid loves work more than anyone I know and can’t see what the options are like your family couldn’t. Financial freedom is the key but there’s also an emotional key to fiddle with about “retirement “

This. You are hardly going to be visiting the lakes every 3 months and hiking in the hills at 90.
Or going to the match

Edit. If your body is still active, your mind might be gone.

It’s the same with everything. That worry box’s contents just change but there’s always something in it. Take kids. The worry about every sniffle as a new born, move on to teeth and the sleeping, potty training, new schools, bullying, exams , off to work/ uni. Ideal I thought, now the bollox we are dealing with with her house move ! There’s always a worry it just changes. We have taken in a project at home and I’ve worked harder in the last year only to have another land on us that was simmering since before lockdown IMG_1858.jpegnew project from before lockdown

Its very liberating having the whole day free ,everyday. I had a do very little day yesterday. No big activities, just stuff . It was great . I went to a workmates birthday doo at the weekend . It sounds as bad as ever and it's history to me now

What's that figure? It's clearly more than your tax free earnings allowance

Take £16760 from SIPP/DC pension 25% is tax free the remainder works out at £12570 which is a lot of people's personal allowance so that's tax free as well. That's what I'm doing

Ah ,get you . Get the 25% on each withdrawal instead of lump . I just took it in 1 and left the pot as drawdown with no plans to use for a while . Try to keep my income under the tax free figure going forward as I'm under state pension age

Curious...

What did you do with the 25% tax free lumper may I ask?

Can only put 20k in an ISA, so if the rest is in savings you earn income via interest and if drawdown then you'll pay tax on that interest etc...

I'm living off it . Im not a super pot retiree . As you say i get bits of interest off things ,small income off old pension so the trick is to keep it all under my allowance ,tax free . Like you I use up my isa options , sipp /pension top up allowance ,and the like . I decided I needed out of my work situation ,clean break . I may feel like doing something in a year or whatever who knows .
