Retirement - what age you going

Retiring and then looking after grand kids is not my ideal scenario of retirement. Fuck that as my offspring know. Old fashioned attitude I know. But wtf
I like this. I got a comprehensive school education in the NE in the 80s. Both my kids have had a private education and they know that’s it kids- I’m off into the sunshine!

She didn’t have to have three kids

How difficult is it to get Spanish citizenship?

There are two stages. residence then nationality.
Full nationality takes a 10 year qualifying after residence is granted but with the proviso you surrender your British passport...
Never Sir, Never! Born an Englishman and die an Englishman!
Now I say that a bit tongue in cheek but as I say to my Spanish friends `My heart may be in Spain but my balls will always be English.´

Some retirees may lap up being full time kid carers which is fair enough. I have no criticism whatsoever with people who do this. Not for me though. I intend to enjoy what is left of my life with no ties. Offspring will then maybe benefit! Probably wish i would die tomorrow!!

So you surrender your British passport then apply for another.

If I understand you correctly that actually would be an illegal act under Spanish Law... besides which I´ll be 77 by then and that would involve a faff on that I don´t think I´ll be that keen on tbh.
And that´s another thing to get back to the thread.
We are all mortal and energy levels decline as you age. It shocks me how relatively difficult a days graft is these days when in the past I always was like a mini jcb. Really important to consider how to maintain fitness and how to overcome setbacks like periods of ill health and whether you just want to decline gently or whether you will set yourself up to push yourself physically and mentally.
I have friends who have sadly become old way before their time and I have others who put me to shame on how active they are , and I´m on the go all day. I think it´s important to consider not only when you want to retire but the type of retirement you want.

Those in their 40's thinking they'll be working in their 60s'; precisely what jobs do you reckon are going to be around in twenty year's time?

I'm amazed my current job isn't entirely done by computer yet and be surprised if it isn't in ten year's time.

Really good post that mate. It obviously depends on the lifestyle of individuals concerned. Everyone to their own I say. I have no intention of buying a flash car or investing in a new set of golf clubs or holidaying abroad 4 times a year. But if thats what you want fair enough. In other words do what you want and like. Dont try and outdo others

Pornstar.

Golf twice a week.
2 nights or afternoons out a week inc meals.
Season tickets.
Nice holiday x 2. Maybe long term cheap stay x 1 (know a couple who claim its cheaper to go to Portugal jan & feb than stop home!).
Treats for missus n kids.
Buffer for breakdowns etc.
Car every 4/5 year.

Reckon 35-40k a year for 2 would suffice if no other debt.
Guess hardest bit is knowing when youl die!
WHICH have done some figures and reckon £23k before tax gives a comfortable retirement. £30k before tax gives a luxurious retirement. These figures are for a couple. Luxurious includes 2 foreign holidays a year and a new car every 3.
Being retired can be a lot cheaper than you think.
My gold plated final salary pension was destroyed by divorce. Looking to finish in about 3 yeats at 58. Currently self employed so really already semi retired as I only work when I want.

Can’t even begin to comprehend it when you’re 26.
No, but it's a good time to start putting a few quid away. I had a job with a pension in 1990 and the contributions were peanuts. Only lasted a couple of years, moved on and never thought anything of it. Anyway, when I left my job of 14 years a few years back, I looked at combining the 2 pension pots and asked my old pension provider for a CEV(cash value) to transfer it in. It was worth almost £20k!!

Ta.

Ive thought about retirement way more in past few months than my entire life.
Unhealthily so!:) To some sad twats its an obsession, I dont want that.

Head down arse up for another decade then we’ll see where we are.

Best regards to consider it. With the magic of compound interest any money you put in a pension fund now will be working for you for 40 years.
Totally this! Even on a low-paid job, you could put the price of 1 pint away every week and see results.

40 now but its my firm so pay fluctuates a lot.

Id love to trim a day at 50 then jack in 55 but who knows.

what age do you think you will retire , and what age would you like to retire (being realistic as well), the two aren't always the same

I reckon I will go at 60 and I'll be gutted if still graftin at 65. would like to at 55 but know cant afford it although would be nice to drop down to a 4 day week then though for the last couple years, break myself in
Would pack up now if I could (53 now and a plasterer since leaving school at 16, but partner (no) has got in so much debt and cleaned me out so probably die on job, stupid woman.
