BBC Remembering 2012 - why Sunderland away means more to Man Utd than normal

I know a few of their fans and they have mentioned this to me...a lot of them still hate us because of that day.

I understand as it would be like an opposition team celebrating Newcastle pipping us to the title in a game against us. Imagine it would cause a lot of long term resentment.

They chanted and celebrated when they relegated us. I remember that but dont obsess over it.

We still haven't got over Jimmy Hill and Coventry...just saying...
Hill was a cheat and a crook. Read up about him and the Detroit Express in the NASL.

What Hill did that day was cheating and unsporting. The game kicked off 15mins late and he put our score on the scoreboard meaning Coventry and Bristol City played out a draw. It was that unsporting, the final league games have to kick off at the same time. It happened in 1997 to us and Coventry gained from it.

Big difference from fans taking the piss.

Weird because I remember walking back to the station through them after the 2014 semi at OT and they pretty much all congratulated & wished us well (we were playing City in the final tbf).
It's usually fans who have never stepped foot in Old Trafford or any football ground. I was in Old Trafford for the 1-0 under Poyet and the majority had no issue with us.

It is the kind of harmless banter commonplace at football grounds across the country and is bound to be given a few renditions on Saturday, for what is only United's sixth Premier League visit since that famous day.

Part of the article. Its not as bad as being made out

"You thought it was yours, you thought it was yours, we heard you singing, then Sergio scored."

Good song that like. :D

The article is very bitter, I agree. Bit weird. I was there in 2012. It was a bit of a laugh.
I was there too, would have applauded Man Utd had they won the league, everybody in the ground would have. However they didn't so we laughed - banter. Some united fans need to grow up.

This, and the Man Utd thing, is just typical of the modern world. People need a reason sometimes to hate other people to motivate themselves. They’re “only” playing Sunderland, which in the grand scheme of Man Utd means fuck all to them, but throw in 2012, (which actually 14 years later also means fuck all), and suddenly it gives their fans some motivation to beat us. Some people just need hatred to replace emptiness to give themselves meaning.

Work with a lot of United fans and they all stated that they hated Sunderland, even when we were down in league 1. Don’t mind us too much now as they just hate Newcastle instead

Fans of a normal club who seem of big wins got a chance to see fans who expect big wins suffer for a change. So we took it. Man Utd should use it to learn to be humble not use it to be cocky
