Reid foresaw safc demise

In terms of technical footballing ability, that Bruce team was the best we've probably ever had. Granted, some of them were on loan but we had quality throughout. It was just a shame Bruce then thought the likes of Craig Gardner were adequate replacements for Malbranque.
Thought the team we had in the 2nd season we finished 7th was the best technically and the strongest we've ever had in my time. Bruce's team was poor defensively. The game we lost to Man Utd 0-1 at the SoL,when we could have gone top if we beat them, was the 1 true game I think I have seen us be a team was eating at the top table. We were a very good side for just a brief moment. I think we gave the football World just a little wake up moment at that time. Sick as fuck it didn't last as the atmosphere at the SoL that night was great and never really gets a mention - could literally cut the tension with a knife.

It’s what wrecked the “new” safc.
Ive been watching safc since 68/69 at that point. We’d never had a proper top flight strike partnership that’d worry the big boys until Quinn n Phillips. Then with Quinn fading another falls into our lap!. Hutchison should’ve been given what he asked for. So what if it means other positions came asking for rises....they could’ve been told no chance. Footballers know who is really making the difference.......and I think Hutchison/Phillips would’ve been every bit as good as Quinn/Phillips.
I bet both Reid and Murray wish they’d handled it differently now. I believe Hutchison divorced now.....I bet he does anarl.

Hutchinson loved a signing on fee. Smashing player for us but people forget his career was effectively over a couple of months after leaving us.

He stumbled upon Phillips when trying to get Connoly

Phillips was wanting away from Watford cos they shafted him over a new contract. His agent knew Reid was already an admirer so asked Reid if he'd like to sign Phillips & bit his hand off.

Hardly stumbled upon, but he did get lucky on the Quinn partnership

Always wondered that n never could be arsed to check.

phenominal support, over 42k in nearly a third of our top flight home games!
The extension wasnt really built with league one in mind yet were that daft we’ve needed it then too!

i’d imagine its paid for itself many times over.
Quick calc, even just 3 extra thousand paying £25 totals 8.5 million in those games (plus refreshments, plus bcb).
It had to be built then.......or never. SAFC knew the land behind would be used eventually which would mean permission may be difficult. Does anyone really NOT believe the council nivver telt safc “it’s now or never”?

Thought the story was that Roeder said to buy Phillip's instead as he was better?

Wasnt it because the mags had less capacity at the time and we were trying to be billy big bollox?

Goes without saying that he gave us the best times we'll ever have and the good far outweighs the bad.

But he was a stubborn bastard and absolutely took the piss in his last 18 months. He's rewritten history over the last few years (as has Murray). He spent more money than ever before after the extension and the wage bill rocketed, however most of it was on dross like Medina, Laslandes, Haas and numerous cheap kids who never got anywhere near the first team like Mercimek, Peeters etc. Murray had been predicting the arse falling out of football for years and we still ended up on the brink of administration.

Like I said, I absolutely loved watching us under Reid, and in Summerbee we had my fave ever SAFC player. Wasn't all luck but as soon as Quinn went Reid got found out a bit truth be told.

Always annoys me how we never made signings to push out when very well placed at the turn of the year (two seasons running).

Reid was leaving a Watford match pre KO cos Connolly wasn’t playing apparently. Popped in for a chat with Roeder before he left...

Bit of both imho. Future planning permission doubts was the driving force.
It would’ve made more sense to have built another tier on the East side Otherwise.

True about roeder

King Reid was looking at David Connelly but roeder put him onto SKP

The rest they say is history

Wonderful 20:20 vision from Reidy when using hindsight. He fails to mention the fact that when he DID spend money he wasted it on shit like Flo, Medina and Piper
Exactly. It reminds me of when we were in the First Division and in Roker Park Bob Murray was talking about a new ground. Eric Gates was the local pundit and he said why waste money on a new ground - we should spend money on players. He was wrong - players come and go but the Stadium was/is key. You need to create the infastructure and foundations and then get a good manager to make the most of them. Ok, we are in the toilet at the moment but we undoubtedly have the infactsructure with the SOL and the AOL to rise again. Reidy is wrong on this occasion in my view.

He was all that’s good and bad about football at the same time.
Almost all managers lose their way and end up getting sacked or bail out.
Not all signings come good .
So it’s harsh of some to be so critical of PR given that we had success and some great times with him.

It’s the RTG way tho, moan, criticise, slag off, highlight the failings etc etc and moan.

The man who ditched a player on the eve of breaking the record for consecutive appearances for no reason.

The man who played one up top at home to Southampton when a win would've seen us safe.

The man who turfed a winger to the reserves because he wanted to play the following season at his boyhood club.

The man who pissed off the best Sunderland striker most of us have seen by not signing players.

The man who bought the wrong Nunez.

Not forgetting the classic falling out with Thomas Helmer before he’d kicked a ball 😂

It bugs me from an OCD point of view that they did the north instead of the east. Makes the ground a bit lop sided, but it at least makes it different to other identikit bowls of the same era. And I can think of another ground that is ridiculously lop sided 😂

That was 95/96 season we signed Phillips at start of 97/98. But that his how his agent knew Reid might be interested.
