Reid foresaw safc demise

The man who ditched a player on the eve of breaking the record for consecutive appearances for no reason.

The man who played one up top at home to Southampton when a win would've seen us safe.

The man who turfed a winger to the reserves because he wanted to play the following season at his boyhood club.

The man who pissed off the best Sunderland striker most of us have seen by not signing players.

The man who bought the wrong Nunez.
Well at least he didn't bomb the town like Hitler did; happy V.E day :)

Pretty much sums it up

Reidy certainly gave us the most exciting team we’ve had since pussy was a kitten, but he also oversaw the start of our demise. After two 7th places we were on the cusp of being a regular top-half club, but he dismantled the team too early without buying adequate replacements.

My memory of that time was there was talk of him not wanting to spend money because he had been given shares in the club and was now seeing things differently - like it was his money he’d have been spending.

But then when he realised things were going pear-shaped on the park, he started panic buying and wasted all our transfer money on people who didn’t fit (eg Flo).

That saga is the saddest time of my 54 years as a fan because it was our greatest opportunity to get back to the big time.

The Bruce era with the team we had then was the other chance and we blew that too - can you imagine having players of the calibre of Bent, Gyan, Welbeck etc playing for SAFC? It’s like a dream now, but we could and should have built on those opportunities.

He was class but ultimately made some shockers at the end, Flo, Laslandes, Helmer, Nunez and then Hutchison......... never forgive him for letting Don go.

Tbf it didn’t cost that much iirc, probably the cost of Stewart and Reyna.
Personally feel Reidy was the best we've had in my time as a fan. But certain things weren't right with 50% of his signings playing less than 10 games for the club, the Helmer situation was appalling showing his lack of flexibility, also Mickley Bridges situation. I think Don Hutch issue was more to do with Murray than Reid but was the cause of the club falling to bits. But for me at the end of the day the good far out weighs the bad.

He actually spent more than Wenger during his time here.
Net spend, definitely, but that's not much of a thing to brag about really, since Wenger Seaman, Keown, Dixon, Adams, Bergkamp and got Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole for free. And he sold big to bring after 99 to build his next side. Reid had no real assets to sell when he came here. He had to build that quality 97-2001 side.

The problem was he spent that on about what seemed llike a 100 CH's players that Dene Sheilds etc. that never seen light of day 3 shit players on £10K a week that never player were al;ways a lot more expensive than 1 on £30K. Then again he couldn't manage them.

I love Reidy, favourite manager in my lifetime, in truth though he saw his demise when he realised he couldn’t replace Quinny, nowt to do with stadium size.

Quinn, Hutch, Sumerbee, Bridges, Johnson, he replaced none of them with the same or better, f***ing Floh man!

Probably not enough to justify it. As I'm a sad twat I've just gone through our attendances from when the extension was in place. out of 335 games we've gone over 42k 117 times. upto and including the 3 times we got relegated and played in the Championship. Premier League - 266 games 114 attendances over 42k, Championship 69 and 3. The 1st 2 seasons it was extended we had over 42k every home game, other than that the next best was 13. Average times in Premier League barring those 3 good seasons is 3.3 times. Not worth it.
So 114 out of 266 (top flight) despite being absolutely shite for the majority of that time (3 relegation seasons).

It's not the size of the ground what's the problem.

Best times I've seen. He stumbled upon Phillips when trying to get Connoly. He then stumbled on the Phillips Quinn formula and was totally found out when that got dismantled, thinking Flo was the answer as he was also tall  The man who dismantled the team, taking the hump with the likes of Summerbee and Makin cos they said his tactics were shite and then went on the piss with Sykes. The man who wouldn't give Hutchison his promised pay rise, so let him go. Etc.

Always wondered that n never could be arsed to check.

phenominal support, over 42k in nearly a third of our top flight home games!
The extension wasnt really built with league one in mind yet were that daft we’ve needed it then too!

i’d imagine its paid for itself many times over.
Quick calc, even just 3 extra thousand paying £25 totals 8.5 million in those games (plus refreshments, plus bcb).

He has a point although given that he wasted a shit tonne of money from about the year 2000 till he left I’d have been reticent about him spending even more.
