Red card?

Nah I think it’s reckless. He’s committed to it but it’s reckless regardless and it’s so mistimed.

Keepers always protected in these situations though so I’m not surprised he was given nowt.

To be fair to the ref and linesman, I'm not sure it would have been clear to them exactly what had happened.

Anyone who’s played football will know that’s not a red, very brave of Cirkin to nip in on the advancing keeper and get the goal without doubt, he took one for the team.
I think a few people who have played football will disagree with you.

Next you'll be telling us people who have played football think this shouldnt have been a red card

Aye they do tbf. Has a similar instance happened in the prem with VAR? If Cirkin goes up and is wiped out they'd probably have a look at it.

None I can think of. Certainly none as bad as that one.

There was one in mags v Southampton outside the box the other week where Pope almost crippled their player to head it and a throw in was given though 😂

I think it'll happen eventually with someone getting knocked out and it'll be talked about fir ages. Should be a foul and yellow card in my opinion.

Class haha

Yeah I see your point

yeah I see your point but they were two completely different attempts, todays challenge was mis timed by a fraction of a second the one in the link was clearly going for the player. Just my opinion marra

Reminds me of Terry getting volleyed in the face a few year ago but don’t think owtwas given for that either iirc.

This one is a red for me though or at least should be from the viewpoint of knowing refs never give them so didn’t actually expect one today.

How can you say that? The ball was gone and he punched him in the jaw!

I think closed fist clearances like that should be banned. It was a definite red for me.
A keeper can't come for the ball with an open hand, they'd end up breaking their fingers.

Completely irrelevant. It doesn't have to be deliberate, it just has to put an opponent in danger. How is missing the ball by a mile and punching someone square in the face not endangering them?

If a midfielder makes a tackle on the half way line, misses the ball and catches an opponent at the knee, "he was looking at the ball" isn't a defence.

It was purely accidental.

Send a keeper off for that and you’re doing it every week for any challenge on the pitch.

Notice how many of our players wanted the ref to do anything. Zero.

To catch it (if they can). If they can’t, they either risk it with their head like an outfield player or stay on their line. For me punching a ball right next to someone’s head runs the risk of stuff like today.

Whether or not it’s deliberate is of no consequence whatsoever.

For clarity do you think only deliberate fouls are worthy of a red card?

It’s never a red card. He had eyes on the ball and was beat by a fraction of a second. As I said in a previous post, how many of our players wanted any action taken?

Fortunately keepers have the ability of bullet time so this seems fair.
Bloody hell, this theory is brilliant and will stay with me for a long time

I know you think it’s a strange opinion. Eventually heading will be banned altogether and football will be played on the ground. Corners and free kicks head height will be a thing of the past. This conversation will be irrelevant in 20 years.

Is mistimed and reckless. Reckless challenges are reds any where on the pitch unless it’s a keeper.

I didn’t ever expect the keeper to be sent off as they are always protected in these situations and it’s pretty much an unwritten rule that keepers can be as reckless as they want, but challenges that are reckless (intentional or not) are reds by the laws of the game.

Players probably just thought the same as I did tbh and they didn’t even celebrate the goal (I don’t even think the fans there did either really) as they were too busy panicking and running to the bench as their teammate was stone cold unconscious on the deck.

To suggest only deliberate fouls are worthy of reds is a bit odd particularly as there’s no rule to this effect.
