Red card?

Doesn't have to be. Reckless, undue force and endangering an opponent.
This is the Millwall game plan all over, to intimidate and stop opposition players even thinking about challenging for the ball....thank God it was Watmore challenging Patterson when he came rushing out and cleared the ball 2nd half 'cos anyone else from Millwall and we'd be looking for an emergency keeper for the next month or two.

Looks miles worse than it is.
There's no way that was deliberate,

It doesn’t have to be deliberate. It has to be a challenge that endangers an opponent.

How can missing the ball by a mile and punching someone in the face not meet that criteria? Deliberate or not.
Yes but no one else on the pitch is allowed to try and punch the ball in their role.

Defenders are allowed to kick the ball. And if they try to kick a ball that’s at head height, miss it and catch the opponent in the face, they’re off.

Haway man that’s clearly different to a keeper trying to punch the ball at head height but you knew that really.

Definitely more rash than deliberate to me but nevertheless he didn’t show consideration of risk of harm and actually knocked him out so hard not to consider it dangerous play. The grey area is that goalkeepers put their hands up, but if that was a defenders elbow it would have been a red.

No it's not. It's not different in the slightest.

Whether it's with your hands or feet - when you go in for a challenge, get it wrong, and endanger an opponent, its a red card.

It's no different to an outfield player going in for a challenge, missing the ball and catching someone below the knee. It's a poor challenge that puts the opponent in danger.

No need. Just ban them from punching people in the face.
I doubt that will ever happen tbh I'm surprised this topic hasn't been talked about much before. You'd have to stop keepers from catching the ball from busy corners and free kicks as well I suppose.

Keepers would just fly in palms out saying they are catching it.

 this place man

Eyes fully on the ball, going to punch it.

Aye someone on the match thread, might’ve been @Mowgli said anywhere else on the pitch he is off. It’s ridiculous in this day and age that is still a thing.
That was me. Tbh though I thought Cresswell had elbowed him. I haven’t seen it back though. And either way someone has caught him late with excessive force.

No, because if the keeper catches the ball, that's not a mis-timed challenge is it?

If he made that challenge outside the box (I know typically he wouldn’t mad he can’t use his hands) he would have been sent off fir it being reckless. In the box it’s fair game.

It’s not deliberate but it’s reckless. The view from the other side just shows how long he takes to make his mind up to come for it and he misjudges it. If he comes out half a second earlier he’s jumping to claim it out the air above peoples heads.

Edit: if that’s a throughball and a striker running through to head it then I reckon the keeper would be off as well but because it’s a cross it’s allowed.
