Recommendations please - Scotland

If you're only going for one night you should look at the weather forecast to decide whether you want to go east or west. I work in Scotland most of the time and have been to most areas on the mainland.

Forget about going too far north as your one night will become 3 days. Scotland is much bigger than many people think.

If the weather is ok take a scenic drive up the A68 and stop in one of the border towns like Jedburgh, Selkirk or Melrose which will only take a couple of hours.

If you want something with a bit more of a highland feel, Loch Lomond is not far past Glasgow and has beautiful countryside.

I so nearly mentioned Newcastleton, only an hour and half away but quite remote and peaceful, been many times, poor buggers were underwater last night

Keep going to Portpatrick, might be really interesting in the storm as well
