If you're only going for one night you should look at the weather forecast to decide whether you want to go east or west. I work in Scotland most of the time and have been to most areas on the mainland.
Forget about going too far north as your one night will become 3 days. Scotland is much bigger than many people think.
If the weather is ok take a scenic drive up the A68 and stop in one of the border towns like Jedburgh, Selkirk or Melrose which will only take a couple of hours.
If you want something with a bit more of a highland feel, Loch Lomond is not far past Glasgow and has beautiful countryside.
