Reasons to keep Steve Bruce as manager thread

For starters, I don't think that this message board is a true representation of the fans' opinions and I think this board undoubtedly attracts extreme views (positive & negative). I don't actually know anyone that wants Bruce sacked of my Sunderland supporting mates/family. We all basically realise that this is what being a mid-table team is like.

I agree that it hasn't been solely down to bad luck which I previously acknowledged. Bruce has had his moments - his substiutions, for example, I sometimes find baffling. However, I do think that the function of this board is generally to exacerbate the negativities at the club/team rather than look at the bigger picture. It's certainly a big summer, mind.

I don't know anyone who wants him to stay!!!

why do you need so many threads?

some fantastic performances, alot of the losses we accrued were despite being far and away the better side [im thinking today, 0-2 blackppol, first 45 against fulham, 2-3 against stoke etc etc etc] better to play well and get nowt that be shite, we are far from shite.

massive steps forward in quality of side. very little net spend if any

continued establishment of premiership status - we are still a yo yo side to everyone outside sunderland, every little baby step helps.

academy is turning into a real conveyor belt, 3m for wags, henderson, colback establishing themselves, noble, lynch, cook, now laing all gettting chances

plenty to cheer ya miserable fecker

interestingly that's one game the epitomises our season. we played some good football but allowed them to bully us into submission. knocking triangle passes around the half way line looks pretty but we need to be tougher mentally and physically all around the park. we also need to convert our possession into goals and certainly need to defend stronger than we did in that game and in today's.

In what other industry would anyone be given a fortune to spend in order to save their job? It's economics from the madhouse, get rid now and get a proven man in, take the gamble out of it. Or, is this what Short wants? A wheeler/dealer who doesn't really spend too much overall. It could be money that counts and the fact that a free transfer from Cardiff City as (possibly) our next centre forward (not as cover) could be an indication of the philosophy at the club.

I'll say it again, "In reality, what has changed".

  • After two years failing to buy a LB
  • Dubious medical & fitness regime
  • Playing a RB at LB
  • Playing a CH at RB
  • Selling a star striker & failing to replace him
  • Taking the squad on holiday two years off the belt & telling them the season's over
  • Half time team talks
  • Plan A and no Plan B
  • Abandoning the FAC
  • Buying Riveros, da Silva, Angeleri, Kilgallon,
  • Weird substitutions
  • Too many loanees
  • Persisting with Mensah
  • Selling Kenny yet continuing to lump the ball heavenward
  • Getting rid of Reid & possibly Healey, too
  • I'm getting bored now...

Sorry but he's never a LB.

well you raise a few semi-valid points, but chairman and manager agreed to not replace bent.

the left back point is valid but the only reason Richardson has not been there is injuries.

you can't blame Bruce for the injuries, that's mental, if your saying that I'll say he has single handedly kept the players who have played, fit.

same with half time team talks. all these comments show is you've dug your trench and will now find anything you can to want him gone.

why?

Deluded....

No need to be getting abusive man  ...jesus enjoying your weekend are ya? christ...

Bent- profit of between 6-14 million depending on adds on on our side/spurs/villa...

Mig - gonna be a great keeper - Bargain
Bramble - Bargain
Sess - Bargain
Gyan - gonna be a great player here - Bargain
Turner/Cattermole..... hampered with injuries...look good when they're fit...this season has been a write off for both...payed the right prices for them though...

...the development of Henderson and Colback under Bruce will have added considerable value to them......

..there off top of my head...don't know why I bother replying to such an ignorant post though...

He's cost us about 8 goals in the last 4 or 5 games. Flapping like a kite yet again yesterday and gifted Wolves the points. Nou sure how you can describe him as great.

Think another season will give a fairer telling of his potential with us....the injuries this season make it impossible to be an accurate judge. We were cruising, challenging for Europe in January.... we shouldn't forget that too quickly. I wasn't happy to see him given a contract extension but I'm certainly happy to see the guy get another season....

agree

finishing outside the top 10 is failure this season. yes there are mitigating circumstances like the horrendous injury list but you have to question his South American buys who frankly have contributed nothing.

However, I am inclined to think he should be given another season to turn things around. Bruce has made his job this summer ten times more difficult than it was last summer, the side is in free fall.
Is Campbell finished? is Cattermole turning into a Jonathan Woodgate, plauged with injuries, is Gordon going to play enough games to be considered first choice, can Bruce rely in these players to suddenly have an injury free season next year, I am not so sure.. Can we attract the type of players that are going to move the club forward, are the funds really there? for all the spin we have sold our best players, Bent, Jones, Cana and pocketed the cash without really replacing them. Yes throw in a marquee signing (GYan) and that seems to act as smoke screen for weakening the team. Unless Bruce is given substantial funds in the summer next season will be another struggle. I just think Short and Quinn are as culpable in this mess as Bruce and changing manager will be counterproductive. I'd rather Bruce have the millions it will cost to pay him and the back room staff off, to spend on players. I genuinely believe he will have learn't from this season and we will progress next year. I also think some fans need to be more realistic what we can acheive......

that's a fair post that, you cultured twat.

For me its the Alan Durban scenario.

A good young side, probably a bit too young, but bags of potential. Some fantastic results on our day, but some fairly long losing runs too, and a fair few hammerings along the way, but uktimately, we'd hover just above the relegation places, which, let's face it, is as well as anyone apart from 2 years with Reid, has managed in over 50 years.

We got rid, Ashurst took us down in his first full season, and then we had McMenemy.

I actually enjoyed the game yesterday. True, I'd probably have been going mad if we'd had something to play for, but I thought we played some cracking football in the first half, and its nice to see us playing it along the deck not just lumping it forward. And this with only maybe one or two of our first choice players in their "normal" position. And that is only if you believe that Henderson is naturally a right sided midfielder, and Mensah is first choice centre back.

I also saw enough from Noble, Colback and Lynch to suggest that they have a future at this level (didn't see enough of Laing).

Of course its not all rosy, and yes, we still need to bring in a number of new players, but I'd give him another year.

I have the same nag, I've seen this one before.

Like most on here I'd be shot of Bruce if I knew we had a safe pair of hands with genuine talent lined up but that's true at any time, we should always be looking to upgrade on all fronts. Can I see us landing a tried and trusted gaffer from the top tier of the game, nope.
