Real ale on match days

Have you had bad pints in the Isis?
Beer selection is generally shite in there these days.
The Dun Cow is a great pub, but all the hand pumps are American hop IPAs, so not what I'd call real ale. The only bitter is Samson out of a keg. Its obviously what people want, but it all tastes like Brew Dog to me.
Tried to charge me £8.10 for a pint of some 4.7% Anarchy beer in there the other week.

The casks change all the time so that’s not necessarily true. Depends what you get on the day. The only ‘permanent’ on they have is Allendale Pale which whilst it does use American Hops isn’t exactly some piny resinous monster and doesn’t taste anything like any Brewdog beer I’ve tasted.

On their last insta post they show they have a stout and a bitter on cask.
The Dun Cow would be the perfect pub to take someone from the States. Get an Uber if they cannot walk too far.

The Dun Cow and The Isis would be my choices.

Do not go to Vaux if you want real ale. Though well intentioned, people are getting confused and offering bad advice. Vaux is 99% keg and often don't have their one cask line on. If you go expecting cask ale you'll be disappointed.

Isis, Dun Cow, Fitzies are the best options in town for real ale. The latter probably best if you want traditional English styles.

It has become very expensive. Given that they often try and fob you off with a quarter of a pint of head, it's even more pricey.

Same stuff is £3.50 in harbour view. I understand pay a bit extra in town and I don’t mind paying. I think anything over 6 quid and they should be telling you before they pour it. Tried to charge £8.50 for a can of Vaux Freddy’s Drop in The Peacock. Told him to put it back in fridge. The lad told me he had said it’s too expensive to whoever sets prices. That’s just taking the piss.

Re Saltgrass haha no )))
Err let’s just say it’s not the Saltgrass of old 😉

This happens every time people mention 'ale'.. not just on here, in general. Me dad gans off it when people recommend pubs for us cos we like 'all the proper beers' and you turn up and it's just hipsterville triple IPAs and stouts all on draft or bottle with no handpull real ale in sight .

Blues bar in whitburn is real ale ..as is the harbour view, avenue, fitsies etc...the dun cow, ivy, Chaplin's, the peacock and Isis have plenty real ale on too, but I don't like Thier selections usually..too fancy and wierd. I just like a golden, clear, 4%ish normal easy to drink real ale.. for some reason the Isis and ivy never have these simple ales on.. it's frustrating as fuck..

You go up the lakes or down Yorkshire or Lancashire and every single pub has at least one 'golden' ale. Simple, effective.

The wear beer stuff in the Isis is a lot more traditional than the "weird" real ales...

As an aside I went to watch the Smoggies at Exeter City last Tuesday. In the Centre Spot, their club bar, they had a regular keg bar and a separate real ale bar with 4 beer choices and 1 cider

aye hopefully that stuff will become a 'house' ale, and they'll have one main one that is light, clear, 4%ish percent and easy to drink.

i've tried a few of theres and they are alright, but still in the 'development' stage and was a bit cloudy. maybe thats how its supposed to be, i don't know. it was about a month ago last time i tried it

i know its personal preference and all that, but in my experience any real ale that look like this will have people drinking 7 or 8 pints in one sitting no problem

4 of us drank over 20 pints of Golden Tap by Great North East brewery, on sunday afternoon in a couple of hours. it was absolutely lovely, easy to drink, and you just couldn't get enough of it. it was light and clear and in perfect condition. it kept its head all the way down. it seems to be something that is available in every part of the UK other than sunderland city centre. a strange phenomenon

Fitsies gets it bang on with loads of their beers, like the Jarl
Whats the KIngs Arms like as a pub, that is the one behind B&Q Deptford way?

about 2004-2010 it was CAMRA pub of the year almost every year, had 9 pumps on at one point and was rammed thursday to sunday every week. was a class place to work and drink.

the owner left around that time and it just slowly died off, its been passed around a few landlords but its ultimately owned by a brewery and it rarely has anyone in these days. we still go down from time to time but they only have one real ale on (white rat) and its usually iffy as i don't think its kept right.

its got great potential with everything thats going on down the riverside with the new developments, hopefully it'll pick back up one day. my worry is that they'll introduce food and it'll be ruined forever. its a drinking bar, it just needs some people in there.

Like a pint of Dizzy Blonde - quite common in the Lakes. Malty 👌🏻

A law should be introduced so that every pub has top notch White Rat on.

Should mean it is decent and recent though!

I haven't been in the Ivy since forever or the ISIS in a month or so. But your preferences are similar to mine (mostly as I cannot drink many strong ones) and I nearly always find something around that in ISIS. My biggest issue in there is they have the world's darkest fridge with some sort of thick fog in it so you have to get someone to read the cans out.

Last two home games I’ve went to we just been to the kings before and after the match, it’s a decent little boozer. Don’t think the landlady knew it was early KO today, as she was just opening about 11:30 and a load of brum fans rocked up. I’ll happily go there for every home game tbh. I’m not an ale drinker so no idea on that front, although most seemed to be drinking that white rat stuff.
