Raquel Welch. RIP

A lady I first heard of as the subject of one of Mad Jacka’s jokes at Monkwearmouth, sometime around 1986:

I got arrested at the weekend. The copper said “Anything you say may be held against you.” So I replied “Ah, Raquel Welch”.

Another era…

She was certainly a big 60's icon and apart from the ridiculously funny One Million Years BC was in some quite good films. Sophia Loren was a little older as was Claudia Cardinale both of who were perhaps more established as film actors than Raquel. Sophia for example got the big Holywood epics like El Cid and Fall or the Roman Empire.

He last contemporary - who like Sophia Loren is now in her mid 80's - was Ursula Andress. Ursula did not have as big a film career as the others but of course achieved film imortality when she simply stepped out of the sea in the first James Bond film Dr NO. An image that rivalled Raquel's one Million Years BC pose both of which became very popular Athena posters & adorned a lot of teenage boys bedroom walls in the 60's & 70's

Was it the poster of Raquel or Ursula that Andy used to hide the tunnel entrance in his prision cell in The Shawshank Redemption ?

RIP Raquel
