Rank Sunderland managers

The love in for Keane is mental.
You can see why.

Took us from bottom of the league after a few games to winning the championship.
Plenty of last minute winners.
Kept us up after years of yo-yo.
Beat the mags at home.

He had a big budget, and it turned shit towards the end (like it usually does for our managers), but he gave us brilliant memories.

Don’t know a lot about Brown and Durban, what was their time like?

Yeah I said that
Durban in particular turned a team playing badly into one which seemed to have a bright future, with young players including Ally McCoist, Barry Venison, Nick Pickering and Colin West. But he fell out with the Board, was sacked and left us all wondering 'what if'. Had been a very good midfielder himself, won the League under Clough at Derby.

In my lifetime:

Peter Reid
Roy Keane
Gus Poyet
Tony Magnifico
Martin O'Neill

Stokoe was before I was born, but he's clearly the Don Corleone of our previous managers.

Can you rank your top 5 managers you have seen in your time as a Sunderland fan. Try not to concentrate too much on how it ended but the good times you had as a fan, performance during, sense of hope etc. My first one I remember was Peter and nothing beats those early years.

1. Peter Reid - first manager I remember and felt like winning games was the norm as a young lad
2. Roy Keane - first years of big drinking going to away games during that promotion season
3. Poyet - cup final, like his way of playing and league cup finals don’t come along often
4. Mowbray- not enjoyed watching the lads play as much in such a long time
5. Controversial Bruce - similarly for the early drinking days but thought we had a chance of competing in the top level with decent transfers (unfortunately didn’t get anywhere)

If you're going to have Poyet in for getting us to a cup final, then for me Malcolm Crosby ranks higher because he got us to an FA Cup final when we're were second division. I appreciate you might be younger than me like.

I liked Denis Smith but some of that might be because it was when I made my debut as a supporter.
Roy Keane's arrival was box office and there were some very good times with him in charge.
Peter Reid obviously with the strikers and wingers smashing through all opposition.
Although people don't like Bruce he got us decent finishes in The Premiership which is a million miles away from the past 10 years or so.
Mowbray had the right idea about bringing the young players through.

I was gutted with O'Neil and Moyes, both of whom I very much wanted and neither worked out.

I’d probably have Grayson out that list and Wilkinson in maybe even above Moyes. In terms of quality of players at disposal only McM%#*#$ did worse. (Also before my time but been told)
I had blocked Wilko from my memory. Although thinking of Wilko for some reason also reminded me that Terry Butcher existed. Both probably worse than Grayson

In my lifetime - I can't really put them in order except having Reid as number one. Keane, Smith, Poyet and Big Sam. There's others who had achievements but overall didn't set the world on fire, Crosby 92 FA cup final with a average 2nd div side, McCarthy getting us promoted with a pretty average side and bugger all money.

1. Roy Keane took over when we where 24th in championship and won it the same season kept us up in first season in premier league
2. Steve Bruce finished 13th and 10th our 2 best premier league finishes since I started going to the matches
3. Martin O Neill did better at Leicester and Aston Villa than us but one the best starts for us any manager has had the goals we scored and his goal celebrations were amazing
4. Gus Poyet got us to the league cup final and the quarter final of the fa cup plus performed a miracle to keep us up
5. Big Sam saved us from relegation and got the england job i doubt many of our managers have managed that
6. Alex neill first sunderland manager to win the play offs even if it was league 1
7. Lee Johnson won us the Papa Johns trophy
8. Tony Mowbray got us into the championship play offs
