Random England players of the 90s

If you say so.

Plenty of players could have been great but for inconsistent form and lack of application.

Bit harsh on Ben who was still only 24 when he died an a very good cricketer.
Definitely and they had a lot of chances, I think their inner belief was lacking at the really top level but being fair to them, it coincided with some of the best Fast bowlers and Spin bowlers that there has been.

True enough and ironically Ramps averaged 40 against Australia

His career has been mythologised due to his untimely death. He was a good, young county player but debatable if he was international standard. His form dipped massively after being dropped for England and he lost his place in the Surrey team.

Sam Curran was the same age when he made his England debut and has been head and shoulders better than Hollioake was.

Alan Wells
Good shout. Decent county pro, got called up v West Indies in 1995 at the age of 34.
His whole career peaked at this moment

Got out first ball to Ambrose

Made 3* off 39 balls in 2nd innings. Never played again

On the face of it, a bizarre selection completely inline with the revolving door policy in the mid-90s

He’s the first name most people come out with whenever people mock the England teams of the 90’s but they can never take it away from the lad. As the article suggests, he’ll always have that tag ‘ex-England cricketer’.

God bless him.

Surely someone has mentioned Mike Smith by now?

Picked because it would swing at Headingley, didn't swing once and Thorpe dropped Matthew Elliott off him who went on to make 199

Not so much rabid but could move it around lovely with his left arm swing.
One of them players who was nailed on for 70+ wickets most seasons iirc. But never did a jot at test level
Was he before or after Simon Brown? They seemed to try out every left armer before settling on Mullally
