Agreed. They’re all issues various groups are working together to fix.

Stewarding is one issue. There’s stewards who stand at the back of the stand who don’t challenge people when they’re clearly squashed in. All of the experienced stewards left the club during covid and have found other work.

How easy it is to migrate is another issue. We’re looking at ways to prevent that.

Great to hear mate

The stewards didn’t just do SAFC. They’d do other events etc. Would probably be about 30 hour weeks. They’ve gone to places like DPD & Amazon.
Pile of shite, I work at the SoL and did so before and after covid and the stewards have largely stayed the same.

It's a sideline for most people, few extra pennies on a weekend.
30 hour weeks as a SOL steward? Think about what you just wrote 😁😁

It's not a full time job for anyone, it's supplementary income for people with other jobs, or students.
100%. I know a few stewards who do Sunderland and Newcastle but the most just do one or the other for the extra £. Most of the time it's easy coin and they get to watch some football.

I’ve just said, they didn’t do only SOL things. They were employed by an outside agency who sent them to do other things on non match days.

The point is, most people who used to do it and therefore were experienced etc aren’t doing the work anymore. Hence the agencies are employing inexperienced people.

The club do (or did) employ more senior stewards mind whose role goes beyond just a few hours on a sat or tues. They work most days around the SOL or AOL with events etc.

The stadium safety officer told us different today.

Good evening all,

I’m trying to do some research in to rail seating, specifically the idea of having it installed in the Roker End.

Would you be for or against having rail seating/safe standing installed?

Mods - would it be possible to get a poll added?

Cheers
I'm all for it but please don't put a poll up as you'd get people sitting in the west stand saying no, purely out of spite. Also, it's the South Stand, the Roker End has been demolished.

Sunderland hire their own stewards.

That's definitely not true for the vast majority of stewards.

Yep. The job advert even describes it as a "matchday' role that 'could be balanced with your main job or other commitments'.

There are 2 types of steward. Ones employed by Sunderland and ones who are agency (alpha security I believe).

Sunderland’s stewards are in charge and direct the agency lot. The agency staff are the ones who are far less experienced than pre-covid.

Are it trying to tell me alpha security give these people 30 hours per week, but couldn't during covid so people changed careers?

I very much doubt that's typical. The vast majority of stewards have other jobs, or are students.

No, I’m trying to say that pre-covid, the people who worked as matchday stewards (agency staff) also did other work, including other agency event work.

With the shutting down of events, these people had to seek alternative employment. Lots of these ended up at places like DPD, Amazon etc, companies who were taking on massive amounts of staff during covid.

Now events are happening again, the agencies can’t get those staff back, as they’re earning better money without dealing with pissed fans, in shit weather for poor money.

The agencies therefore have to employ lesser experienced staff. Hence the lower quality of stewarding.
