Proper Roker End

Who were the mad bastards who used to stand on the roker end in weather like last night?
Always amazed me that, 3 sides of roker were covered, the roker could be battered by the weather on a Tuesday night in November v someone shit and hardly souls would decide on the roker end.
Me..... Was frickin freezing 99% of the time

I think the roof went up in '66 when they put the wooden benches in for the World Cup. Might have been a bit earlier. I was a Roker-ender from the late 50s when I went with my Dad. I would stand on a swing-thing hooked over the spikes on the back wall, and when the footy was rubbish I would watch the shipping in and out of the harbour. When they put the 'boys end' in at the front, maybe in '62(?) I would go there with my mates. Paddocks and the Fullwell were only for Cup games. I only sat in the grandstand once, when I took my Dad for his last game, against Derby in 1990.
Mickey, I think you're right about the roof in the Fulwell... put up at the same time, or near enough, when the "seats" were put in for the World Cup in 1966. I'm old enough to remember looking at it uncovered from the Roker End many times as I too started in the late 50's there with my granda.
Got me thinking about where I'd watched from. Vast majority in the Roker, several seasons in the Fulwell when the chanting started, one from the Clock Stand when it was standing, one memorable match from the main stand paddock (Man Utd in the never to be forgotten 63-64 FA Cup match when the gates were broken), and a season in the main stand when I was luck enough to get a free seat most weeks.
Happy days!

It was painted red in the summer of 83

I was in the Main Stand paddock for the Birmingham game. Never seen the Roker End as sparse before or after. The ground seemed 3 sided. There was a line of guys with brollies sheltering on the back wall and that was about it.
Ha...that's about right. Mind you, I wasn't on the back wall - and I was saturated. At 15, what's the bother, eh?

I stood in the Roker end in some pretty bad weather , it did get a tad chilly.

Was a Fulwell ender from circa 63 as a 4 year old, my first venture into the Roker end, pretty sure it was early 78 v Spurs, & sure I was with Reiver, can't remember why we went in that end,
anyway, got onto the terrace just before kick off, decided I'd go back & get a programme, got down just as the Spurs fans were comming in, was hell on & got caught up in the ruckus, ended
up getting lifted, so for a 300 mile round trip I'd seen the pitch for about 2 fooking mins, never went in the Roker end again.
I got escorted out of that game too.

Remember being in there for a game early 90s, I think it was New Years Day. I only completely thawed out a few years ago. Don't think I've ever been so cold since.

Started off in the Roker end in what we called the 'boys end' (as in children) behind the goal. Anyone remember if it was really called that or 'the children's enclosure ?

I used to love it, late 80s til the end of roker. Was always my favourite end the roker end, didn't seem to care about the cold or rain when I was a kid.

'Always liked the Roker End, never really liked the Fulwell. Clockstand Paddocks or the Roker End were my preferred choices. 'Only times I remember being in the Fulwell were when I couldn't get in anywhere else, such as Coventry League Cup or Chelsea FA Cup, or Chelsea Milk Cup. 'Never really thought about why before, and now that I think about it still don't know why, but much preferred the Roker End to the Fulwell End. I can remember being in the Fulwell for Birmingham at home around 1986, Dave Buchanan playing, but can't remember why I went in there, and Paul and Simon on the radio/tannoy about half 2.

Favourite memory of Roker End was late 70s beating Everton in the snow, FA Cup night match. Very young. In the Roker as a bairn as grandad said I could sit on the square barriers. Fulwell Ender once I was tall enough not to need the barrier.

Why anyone would choose to stand in either of the paddocks is beyond me.
The 'view' of the game was utter shit.
