Decided to listen to the latest RR “love in” Podcast with SD last night. I was initially left feeling enthused and positive by what SD had to say and whilst I think he has genuine intentions but on reflection I can’t help but question a couple of things he said.

1) when asked about taking out short term loans instead of asking Juan Sartori to help out he rambled on about being to proud to go cap in hand to Juan at this stage. Well that’s all well and good but surely the well being and rebuilding of the club should come before SD saving face over what he is now claiming to be a “rushed” uncomprehensive due diligence?

2) SD said the reason the loans might be needed is partly due to the Alvarez court case. He went on to claim that Ellis Short had advised there was “no chance” we would lose the case so nothing to worry about. I’m sorry but surely with the money involved in losing the case any person would and should do more than take somebody else’s opinion prior to committing to buy the club, anything else is complete naivety at best. Slightly concerning considering he is trying to rebuild our train wreck of a club!

3) When talking about transfers and Juan Sartori SD stated that if he asked Juan for the funds to buy Jack Marriot he would probably stump up the cash but that’s not how he wants to do things. Surely the absolute priority at this stage of proceedings has to be to get this club promoted at the first time of asking? You don’t buy an investment property at a song that needs renovating and try to fix it up on a shoestring over a long period while your mate who invested with you has the funds to turn the property around quickly? This club in the Premiership is worth £150 - 200 million, £5 - 10 million spent now to guarantee a swift return to the Championship is surely money well spent, what is SD attempting to prove and why by adopting his approach?

Before people start banging on with “we spent money before look where it got us” spending money didnt get us to the 3rd division poor management did.

and

we would rather be self sufficient than reliant on a billionaire” I couldn’t give a damn how we achieve it I just want to see a team capable of challenging in the top half of the Premier League which is where this club should be!

On the money front there needs to be a middle ground surely. A position where we aren’t absolute dicks chucking money everywhere like we have in the past, but equally one where we can flex our muscles in an absolute dogshit league.

We’ve decided to go cold turkey - whereas we have a couple of years to plan our way to stability so it’s just unnecessary. We should surely be able to blow all league 1 competition out of the water with signings for relatively meagre sums of money but still be sensible.

When you unpick through the rambling dialogue there are some real concerns with new regime and how they do business. I was gobsmacked by his remarks about the Aleverez deal and not doing due diligence

The huge concern is the transfer activity thus far

This - the lack of transfer activity is a real issue. We will struggle to stay in this league at this rate as things stand so a solution needs to be found

So you are saying you want us to overspend and put the club in with a chance of going bust on something we may never achieve.
Next time we might not be so lucky.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the OP’s post but I fear he’ll be shouted down. It’s sensible to have concerns given how poorly we’ve been run in the past, and your points are good I would say; but I think he’s being reasonable funds wise out of fear of not getting promoted first time. Even if we did buy Marriott for instance, it wouldn’t be a given. And as he has said, getting out of this division in the past hasn’t cost clubs ridiculous amounts. I just say try to be patient, I know it’s a pain, but to have a bloke genuinely behind this club and looking to not bankrupt us whilst still maintaining high expectations on and off the pitch, is class to hear.

Mind, I am worried on the transfer front because it’s never nice to miss out on your first choice in a position, but I’m confident we’ll have 4 in by Tuesday.

So do you want the club to just sign players up and then get an EFL Transfer embargo which fucks up the following season or so?

What embargo? As the chronicle article says, we are in absolutely no danger of breaching FFP.

I also presume we aren’t going to sign a league 2 striker and whack him on £40k a week. Like i say, to blow the mighty Peterborough and Portsmouth out of the water we need to spend pretty meagre sums.

I’m not saying buy Marriot for £6.5 million but spend £10 million on 4 or 5 quality additions and go up first time of asking.

I agree with the Op to some extent. I got the feeling SD was waffling regarding cash input from Sartori. It left me wondering if Sartori has already put money into the club via a loan to SD.
Maybe that is why he doesn't want to ask for more cash. May be a load of crap but I've thought this for a while.
I think the OP is right on his view re Maddison. We are supposed to be looking to invest in players whose worth will increase, surely Maddison at £5m fits the bill.

Not if the player doesn't want to come to Sunderland

Going bust, didn’t SD say on the podcast the ground has been valued at £90 million so no problem getting loans against the ground, it’s not like we are going to blow £50 million to get out of league 1 but we shouldn’t be wasting time trying to outbid Portsmouth etc over £200k.

Even with that mate there’s no guarantees, Everton and West Ham spent some ridiculous money in the last 18 months and they’ve not done anything.

We could buy 4 class players and maybe one of them will be great and 3 will have problems, whether it be attitude, form or injuries. They could all be class but Jack Ross might be shite. You never know.

Using the ground as collateral??? Fuck that.
