What was that black Ecuadorean who played for Southampton called
Class on champ manager

James Beattie Everton
Maccarone paid a lot for him
Faubert big money was shite
Hernandez hull

Funnily enough I had reservations about him from the start. Spending that amount on a player who was completely unproven in this Country was a massive gamble, and it backfired badly.

He was so crap that nobody at the club would actually own up to singing him, Gibson, Southgate, Lamb.....

Took that quite well mate fair play. Was expecting a barrage of abuse! We can't talk really, we've spunked some £ away over the years.

Didn't Alves score 4 against Arsenal or something? I might be getting mixed up like. What happended there? Just didn't adapt to English game?

He scored a hattrick against Man City, when we beat them 8-1 on the final day of the season. He also scored twice against Man U, and I remember him having Ferdinand's life that day.

The following season however, he managed just 5 league goals.

In fairness, you could see he obviously had some talent, but he was very lightweight and didn't have the heart for a relegation dogfight, something he probably wasn't expecting to be facing up to when he signed for the club.

He wasn't helped either by the fact that Southgate used to play him on his own up front, when he would have been better suited playing alongside a big man.

You make some very good points and a great post but I still don't see how that makes Gordon any less of a massive waste of money?

Chopra is a great example tbf - if we had spent that money on a quality winger wed have had a much more balanced side, Chopra could have played in the right position and the likes of Healy and Cole would never have been needed.

Gordon wasn't a massive waste of money though. His form at the end of one season probably paid most his fee tbf and he was a good keeper. He may not have been value for money long term but the criticism he gets is far over the top.

You keep saying the quality word again - we were really struggling to get 'decent' nevermind 'quality' despite chucking money around. We were too much of a gamble for quality players. Chopra playing wide first season likely scored as many goals as any winger we could have signed would anyway and then we lost about a million quid on him.

Healy wasn't here that first season, Cole only really had a few sub appearances. By the time Healy came in the next season (which again ignores Chopra was in rehab, Jones injured, Murphy looking to be on his way out and Stokes too, plus Cisse hadn't signed) we were actually being a bit more succesful in the transfer market, as we'd had a season up and weren't looked upon as such a big gamble. By this time we were able to attract Malbranque, Tainio and Chimbonda, Anton but still couldn't compete with the likes of Pompey who had more to offer for Kaboul.
