Premier League signings that were meant to be a coup

i guess that depends how you define flop really. the injuries werent his fault but i don't see how that matters, and whether they were inflicted upon him or what, it was still a shitton of cash that would have been much better spent on a quality striker or winger rather than a keeper who barely played.

did we get 9m worth of player over teh years? abslutely not.

as above, 9m worth of striker or winger would have had us staying in teh league anarl.

And taibi wouldn't have. Therefore Gordon was definitely not even a similar flop to him. Also you don't know that as £9m that year would have got you Ryan Babel, Elano, Alan Smith or Kiran Dyer and I'd argue none of those would have kept us up the way Gordon did

Fulop had played about two games for us at that point after spending a while as Spurs third choice. I don't think Fulop ever proved he was good enough for the Premier League either, the more we saw of him, the worse he got. Had a reasonable end to the season when Sbragia took over and that was about it - there were absolutely no complaints by the time we sold him, as there were a few games in the lead up to it under Bruce where he didn't look capable.

Gordon is vastly underrated by some by the same token, because they couldn't quite grasp that despite a £9m price tag, you're not going to get perfection.

Don't cherry pick. I did say I think Gordon is a better goalkeeper.

Although I personally think Fulop did prove himself and would have kept us up. However we don't need to know as Keane made sure by signing a better goalkeeper

A lot of people on this thread don't understand the concept of either a coup or a flop, and in some cases both!

I always thought elano was a canny player

Di Maria a coup? He cost a fortune.

A coup doesn't necessarily relate to a player's cost though. I'd say, in transfer terms, it's a club making a signing that makes you think "Bloody hell, how have they managed to sign him?" With that in mind, di Maria, who was a first team regular at Real and was still young was something of a coup for Man Utd, much as signing Sanchez around the same time was a coup for Arsenal (one worked better than the other).

This is my list of people I class as a flop...

Harry Kewell, was alright at Leeds and was a bit of a coup signing for Liverpool at the time.

Ade Akinbiyi, people expected big things of him when he moved to Leicester. Instead he became Ade Akinbadbuy.

Hugo Viana, cost the Mags 8 million they were the only fans who thought he was any good.

Karel Poborsky, signed based on his performances for his national side.

Kevin Davies, 7.5 million when he signed for Blackburn, absolute dog turd.

Chris Sutton, cost Chelsea 10 million became more effective as a CB.

David Bellion, how we got 3 million for him, the one time we have had another clubs pants down.

Sean Dundee, cost Liverpool 2 million, who the fuck is he?

Alberto Aquilani, 17 million, nothing more to say.

Winston Bogarde, yes he was free but ended up costing Chelsea a fortune in signing on fee and wages for nothing in return.

Francis Jeffers, expected to be the fox in the box that Arsenal needed. Ended up a toad in the hole.

Steve Marlet, 11.5 million when Fulham were trying to compete.

Ali Dia, yes he was free but was bigged up by Souness when he signed him.

This.
Appointing Guardiola was described as a massive coup for Man City, he will be the most expensive manager ever. Di Maria was a coup for utd, regardless of price tag, they weren't even in the champions league and signed arguably one of the best players in the world.

Afonso Alves - 12m was it? I remember a Boro fan on here arguing he'd be a regular starter for Brazil and he'd be nailed on to be top scorer for Premiership and that 12m was a steal...

@Teesside_Steve

:D

Funnily enough I had reservations about him from the start. Spending that amount on a player who was completely unproven in this Country was a massive gamble, and it backfired badly.

He was so crap that nobody at the club would actually own up to being the person who signed him, Gibson, Southgate, Lamb.....
