Premier League officials in talks with cyber-security experts to block illegal streaming of matches

As I say you can get around that by not offering individual club packages but instead by having a 3pm kickoff "package" where you can choose which to watch just like you do for the champions league, with the big games still moved to the Sunday

Aye much better solution.

I wonder how much PLP and NBC revenue streams would drop if they started getting stricter on people watching from abroad. It would certainly make selling the rights to foreign countries less profitable and less appealing.

The PL are better off with the status quo in all honesty.

Premier League have dug their own hole as far as I'm concerned. Huge amounts of money for TV deals with nothing about keeping ticket prices reasonable for the match day attending fan, especially away fans. TV companies paying ever more ridiculous amounts of cash to show the games ends up with higher subscription charges and unless your a fan of one of the bigger clubs, is there any point in paying what Sky and BT want when you have very little chance of watching your own side live?

As for blocking streams, never going to happen. Years ago I watched bloodzeed streams through sopcast for ages until something was done about sopcast. So I changed to wiziwig for links to sites instead. When that went down, just found another linking site. And now we have Kodi and all the joys that brings. When/if that gets stopped, something else will replace it. Whatever technology the Premier League employ to try to block streams will have a work round done by somebody somewhere to crack it. Probably within about 24 hours.

No chance.

Maybe block open streams with no VPN/tunneling - but no chance of blocking completely.

At best, making it "harder" for the average user.
VPN
It will make it much harder actally. I bet only a few percent of people that use dodgy streams know how to or can be arsed to set up a VPON no matter how easy it may seem to a technical person.

If people want to watch Sunderland home games then they should make an effort to get there. As I suggested an away season ticket could be marketed but it's going too far to suggest that every game should just be free for any fucker to sit and watch at home. As for the argument of those who are exiled, well it's always been the case until recently that you couldn't see the game unless you actually travelled to watch it.

You could say "it was always the case" about a lot of things, like live TV viewing or discussing football on an internet message board. That is no reason why not to change. I certainly don't think the argument "just get yourself to the fecking ground" is a particularly good one.

I have a 330 mile journey to the ground, which is roughly £110 in petrol. Multiply that by 19 home games and say £350 for a season ticket, that is just shy of £2.5k to follow the lads before you consider other expenses on the way, like the Dartford crossing, food, tyres, breaks etc. 660 miles in a day is a hell of a trip with football in between so you are looking at a night over. That is me leaving the wife with two very young kids for most of a weekend, pretty much one weekend in two. That is also me not doing stuff with my kids one weekend in two. I get to a few games per season, but I just don't have the money or time to attend every game. Then there are away games to consider.

However I do love the club, like many others who can't attend for whatever reason. We want to watch the games. This is being fulfilled by illegal streams. For me, I have found it fantastic. I have never felt so connected with the club since I left the north east 20 years ago. (I used to attend every game, plus many reserve and youth games before then). It is clear the demand is there and there is also the opportunity to make money too, but for some reason the Premier League are not picking it up. Criminals are making the money instead.

My feeling is that unless quality streams can be had for £3-4 per game (a new release movie is around £3.50 on blinkbox and I think the same on Play & Amazon), then people will continue to turn to illegal streams. However £3x38 is only £114 to allow fans to watch the games they want. That is far less than the huge amounts for Sky Sports subscriptions. I believe the reason the Premier League is not embracing this is because it could potentially result in a huge drop in TV income. You will probably find more people pick up streams than subscribe to Sky Sports but it is a gamble hitting that split of having more lower paying customers against less higher paying customers.

Best thing to do is finally lift the outdated 3pm transmission ban and change the rights so that we can all, legally, watch any match we want. f***ing ridiculous that our own league can be viewed a lot more easily in virtually any country other than England (or the UK at least). I don't want to pay for a load of shite man united games but, since I can't go away much nowadays, I'd happily pay a fair price to legally watch every SAFC away game in good quality. People nowadays expect to have this choice
Start a petition - why don't you? - I'd sign it!

If Sky/BT were able to launch a Sat 3pm season ticket, it would ease the situation.

Personally I don't care if the streams are blocked/made harder to view.

I always think it is absolutely bonkers that if you abide by the law here you wouldn't be able to see your teams goals or match until 9/10 at night, 6 hours after it happened.

As you say, change it for the right reasons. I, along with thousands of others, would happily pay a fee for the season to be able to watch all our matches in good quality. It's not like anyone likes to visit these dodgy websites where streams are volatile and usually below par.

Can the premier league take legal action against those watching the streams? Just wondering if they make an example of one or two, they will see it as a way of clamping down on it?

Worry over nothing really this is virtually impossible to do and the slight chance it was to happen after a few days of it being enforced someone will have worked away round it. No matter what you watch on the net illegally or not the web should be free as it was intended to do as you please.

So a Sunderland supporter in London should have less chance of watching the team he supports on the TV than someone in the US or Aus?

Why should the world revolve round where you choose to live.......the sense of entitlement with some people is staggering. The club is Sunderland AFC and they play their home games in Sunderland.......If you choose to live elsewhere for whatever reason then that's the price you pay.

I can't be arsed taking out the whole day to get to the SOL, to watch us invariably lose, when I can watch it at home on a 50" TV in near HD and switch it off when one of our clowns cost us the game again.

Whoosh ya fucker.......

They'll never launch a home and away entitlement......it will be away games only if it ever comes about.

I don't think that having the gone matches available to watch on tele would affect attendances much at all mind. People can already watch them at home if they want. If you told me I could sit in the house and watch a home game in nice HD or I could go to the pub with my mates then head over and watch us live I'd be going to the stadium every time, as (I imagine) would the vast majority that do it currently

The key really is that it is possible to let people in London watch legally and it wouldn't have any real negative effect. Unless you want to simply spite people for not living in the north east? Should we only allow people from the North East on to www.safc.com and not allow any non-north east journo from covering the club?

If they can provide quality broadcasts for reasonable prices to countries around the world then they should be able to do it here. People will still go to the match.

I have PLP for about £10/month and I still have a season ticket and get to every home game.

Been saying this for months

It would be beneficial to them surely if they removed the 3pm ban and operated their own streaming service. Premier League Pass operates in New Zealand - introduce a version for English fans and I'm sure they would make a lot of money from it. People will be happy to pay for guaranteed quality and reliable streams.
