Premier League officials in talks with cyber-security experts to block illegal streaming of matches

This is not true anymore, TV money in Spain is distributed in a more equitable way now.

La Liga are working their way over the next four years or so to distribute their TV money using the PLs model which is accepted in football circles as the fairest way. Its the presence of CL money for the top clubs that skews the whole thing. With the new PL deal the CL money will be a considerably smaller % of the top clubs income so will bring the rest closer to the top4.
Problem is the CL deal runs out soon and thatll gan through the roof probably putting the status quo back to normal PL wise. Although the PL clubs are now loaded in comparison to just about 99% football clubs on the planet........................yet SAFC still buy blokes who can barely function as footballers.

I'd happily pay for a decent PL/club stream so I could watch all the away games. My Dad can't get to matches now due to his disability, but he still loves the football and would happily pay for an all the Sunderland matches streamed package.

When they were going to India on holiday, he found it was easier watching Sunderland on TV through the hotel bedroom tele than it is watching Sunderland matches in Washington. That's just mental

As I say you can get around that by not offering individual club packages but instead by having a 3pm kickoff "package" where you can choose which to watch just like you do for the champions league, with the big games still moved to the Sunday

But Utd and Liverpool will push for a bigger % of that deal anarl. As long as the other 18 stand firm they wont get what they want. But some short sighted clubs will vote away their futures for the chance of loaning Jesse Lindgaard or some such kid for a year on a nod and a wink.

Hopefully these days are numbered. Saying that, now we (ostensibly) appear to be realising our mistakes and are doing something to mitigate them, it's more than likely we'll be relegated and miss out on this new tranche of cash.

Been watching football for over 10 years now via satellite and internet.
Every year during that time stories like this surface.

What I don't get is, its paid for anyway by the broadcaster. So why would the premier league care. Surely its the TV companys who need to stop it, not the league.

Might be to push costs up more, to make more money the greedy bastards

The Premier league is directly responsible for this farce. Even if it's costing them 10p a week It's a bonus to me. Money grabbing shit stains. If they dictate a reasonable price to joe public then less people will stream these games.fuckwits

Its not the PLs fault man! The PL is owned by the 20 clubs in it. SAFC have a 20th share in the PL. Scudamore helps administer the PL he doesnt make up the rules or policies. The 20 clubs do that. Its up to the clubs to suggest and vote for any changes in broadcast policy.

The clubs are owned by individuals who hide behind the PL name as a means of deflecting the fans/customers wrath. The 25 man squad and FFP rules were introduced by the owners for the sole purpose of saving themselves money. The owners could then tell managers/fans "we cant buy spend any more money this transfer window as weve already got 25 players and the horrible PL wont let us. Our hands are tied by those bastards down there, believe me we'd be shelling out for new players left right and centre if we could but unfortunately we have to sit on our hands and keep our money in the bank. Sorry." It was a simple money saving exercise on theyre behalf.

Seems to be a lot of very short sightedness on this thread.

The saturation of football on TV & the amount of money that has flooded into the game as a result has wrecked football to a point. Now people want more games & more TV revenue streams? Crackers.

This will only lead to more inequality. Its a f***ing stupid idea.

Yes this.

There is not a magic cable coming in and out of the UK which supplies our internet, that has one firewall box sitting in the way. There are a hell of a lot of internet links coming in, from many suppliers, so you would have to have the ISPs buy-in to do this.

Then you have the problem of identifying an illegal football stream. How do you do that at a technical level? If you detect streaming video data, there is no way of knowing that it is showing a live PL game or that it is linked to a bird box cam - unless you go down a complex image analysis route. That would vastly slow down all traffic making all video streaming next to useless. You could go down the route of blocking specific websites but as you say that has been proven useless too. It would take so long to identify a new pop-up streaming site, get that distributed around all ISPs, then have their technical team configure whatever blocking device they use. If the site popped up just before kick off, you have less than 2 hours to blacklist it in the UK.

If you access your stream over the web that is one thing, but what if you use a media player. I bet it is not hard to write a kodi (or similar) plugin that has tunneling built in. Once there is a tunnel (VPN), any level of filtering by an ISP will not help and this tunneling could be transparent to users, making it simple for not techys.

You then have to consider why should the Premier League be special? If they can get sites blacklisted at the drop of a hat by all ISPs, then why should any business not have the right to do the same? Every media producer from the biggest music producers right down to a lone photography business, the law treats all as equal. Having such a block on request then becomes a massive headache for ISPs, not to mention a legal minefield. As a network engineer, I just can not see how this could be made to work. The technology, legal and admin process required is just virtually impossible.

As Guinness Guzzler says, the problem does not exist because of the technology. The problem exists because of the Premier League and technology is being used because it can fill a gap of what service people want. Sunderland fans want to watch every Sunderland game, not the Sky game of choice. Fill the demand and the problem goes away. But for now, I really can't see blocking coming to anything.

If people want to watch Sunderland home games then they should make an effort to get there. As I suggested an away season ticket could be marketed but it's going too far to suggest that every game should just be free for any fucker to sit and watch at home. As for the argument of those who are exiled, well it's always been the case until recently that you couldn't see the game unless you actually travelled to watch it.

I hope the greedy bastard's 'product' completely collapses one day due to their complete disregard for the foundation of what football is built on -the supporter

How is the supporter disregarded today compared to a generation ago?

It was cheaper but stadiums were poor and you were penned in like f***ing animals.

absolutely agree its all about money what wrong with the likes of us watching a service theyve invested billions into for free - it stinks!

Why should any commercial company give you it's product for nothing.......you wouldn't go into Tesco, fill your trolley up and expect to walk out unchallenged.....or get free beer in the pub.....It's a ludicrous argument.

So a Sunderland supporter in London should have less chance of watching the team he supports on the TV than someone in the US or Aus?

I can't be arsed taking out the whole day to get to the SOL, to watch us invariably lose, when I can watch it at home on a 50" TV in near HD and switch it off when one of our clowns cost us the game again.

I would gladly pay for a legal subscription to all of Sunderland's games but that option is not available as long as the 3pm blackout exists.

I don't think watching illegal football streams is the answer to dropping attendances at football matches or the way to re-invigorate the game. But it is a necessary evil to keep the game alive in my view. It is an alternative to the ever increasing costs, including travel, tickets, accommodation, catering of watching football live. Should streaming be blacked out completely football will die a death. It's a mass participation and spectator sport dependant on being accessible to the masses.

I run a men's football team this season but even for the cheapest facilities it is expensive and we might fold after one successful season. I know many other Saturday and Sunday League teams fold because of the cost. Outside the Premiership, it is difficult to see how clubs can stay afloat nowadays. The powers that be talk about football being accessible lower down the structures but it isn't really.
