Sorry but that's a load of crap he's lost the plot man. He stands on the touch line and can communicate directly with the players. There's no way he would expect them to "work things out by themselves" due to the way he sets out his team before the game. They have to maintain their defensive positions first and foremost, it's drilled into them on the training ground! He is the architect of the teams failure. The buck stops with him. You can see the players confidence dwindling as the game goes on. You just have to look at pantillimons distribution especially on Saturday to see the mistakes being made are purely down to frustration at the tactics poyet is asking them to employ. It is not going to get better we have seen this before it is only going to get worse and us as fans can do nothing about it.A lot more here
Gustavo Poyet fears Sunderland remain “miles away” from where he would like to position the club.
The Black Cats are 16th in the Premier League, one point above the relegation zone following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at the Stadium of Light.
They have won just three league games this season, only one on Wearside and once, also, in their last 11 top-flight outings. Poyet believes the club is moving, albeit slowly, in the right direction, away from a recent past spent yo-yoing between the Premier League and the Championship, or staving off relegation from the former to the latter on an annual basis.
Those teams were “rubbish”, he said, “full of bad decisions and suffering” and lacked “characteristics”.
The Uruguayan continues to attempt to stamp some degree of identity on Sunderland.
But while trying to “find a way together”, Poyet believes there is still a long way to go.
Asked why his players had backed off from their Liverpool opponents, rather than close them down, he said: “There was confusion.
“It’s about understanding the game. We need to be flexible. You cannot take things literally.
“When you go on the pitch things are going to happen and I cannot predict what will happen.
“You don’t know if a team will play four in the middle, square across the pitch. You need to adapt.
“The disappointing thing is we sorted it out at half-time. I was expecting my team to be able to sort it out themselves. That is why I am disappointed.
“(Getting into opponents’ faces) was the characteristic of one Sunderland. Kevin Phillips and (Niall) Quinn.
“The rest of the teams of Sunderland (between then and now) did not have any characteristics. They were rubbish. They were playing for relegation and suffering.
“I am trying something. But we are miles away to a point that it worries me a little bit.”

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet before the match
Invited to compare those teams he deemed “rubbish” to his own, Poyet added: “I don’t care, I am just saying what I feel.
“We have to be realistic. Sunderland have been in the top 10 once in the last 15 years I think. The rest have been full of bad decisions and suffering.
“One season they had a player who scored 24 goals (Darren Bent) and since that player left, no one has scored more than 15.
“I could give you all the stats you like, but it is very simple. You cannot go backwards.
“Niall Quinn retired a few years ago and Kevin Phillips is a coach at Leicester (City) so we can’t go back to that team.
“We need to find a way together, making the team play in a certain way. We have to be better and more adaptable, more intelligent on the pitch as a team and we are not.
“Maybe we should play Newcastle every week.
“I accept we gave away 45 minutes today. After that we tried. I cannot ask for any more than that with the personnel we have got.
“I was expecting against Leeds (United, in the FA Cup third round eight days ago) for my team to control the game but we didn’t. That really made me feel bad.
“We have no option but to keep going, to make it better, make better changes and decisions.
“The players (Steven Fletcher, Jozy Altidore, Jack Rodwell, Lee Cattermole and Anthony Reveillere) coming back from injury have big, big chances now. I need them. I hope they take them.”

You think if we called fletcher a balding pile of shit at the game it would have the same effect as poyet calling him it in a press conference?, clueless.Gus says things have been f***ing shite since Phillips and Quinn and now the hysterical bedwetters are saying that's the last straw.
f***ing hilarious.
He's telling the truth and you know it.
Same thing we fans are saying every week, Gus says it and it's meltdown time.

Missed the point totally once again. I mean as a club. We have a DOF system in place, that needs to remain whether poyet does or not. My point is people are wanting instant progress within 7 months of this system being in place. It's just not realistic. Next season is the time to judge the whole thing for me. We must stay up this season thoughEvery manager has a blueprint FFS if he didn't he wouldn't get the f***ing job in the first place..so poyet's no better
I'll think you'll find that both have sacked managers while the season was only half way though !
And he also said he didn't know how Liverpool would set up..so who's the clown![]()
Rodwell or neebody - take your pick.he has a point but then why agree to spend £10 million on Rodwell?
I don't want to persist with this style, I'm sorry. It's awful.I'm not on about managers ffs. To implement a philosophy, a style and clear recruitment policy. We are still early into our development on that stage. It may never come to fruition but that's the blueprint we are following. It's not panic stations yet, see how the next month goes.
I'm not talking about the style of play. Jesus man, it's not difficult to deduct what I'm talking about.I don't want to persist with this style, I'm sorry. It's awful.
You. For not knowing that Liverpool often change from a back 3 to a back 4 and play midfielders wider sometimes and switch around their attacking players a lot. And if Gerrard is playing as a no.10 or a defensive mid it changes things. Lots to consider and impossible to know exactly how it'll be each week. So yeah...

Yes, it was only one option for spendind 10m on a midfielder, I'm sure. No other footballer could have meet the criteria.Rodwell or neebody - take your pick.
Not strictly true .., it's a case of years of shit had got into a mess, you can have the best manager in the world but they won't go too far with a squad of for the most part mediocre playersSo thats ok then..if he fucks up he can just blame someone else great![]()
You made the statement marra..so please explain ?
I agree with this. His hands a re tied to an extent, but he needs to improve himself.nothing wrong with this but Poyet has to take some blame
the players may not be good enough or playing how Poyet wants but if they are unable to do what he wants effectively then he needs to look at other ways that will get the best out of this bunch.
since we came back up we have spoke about marquee signings. IMO we have had probably only 2 those being Bent and Gyan. For us to get wer Poyet wants we need a team of them like Southampton do but it is going to take time and a lot of money.
Can anyone see us splashing out 10-15m each on 2 or 3 players a window in the next 3 or 4 transfer windows? I can't but that is what is needed.

Cattermole, Johnson and Fletcher ? because they drink ?You're talking about our best players, as am I. While I may question their attitudes I know who they are. Little bit worried about going out on a limb there?
Ha Ha And if you know this, don't you think that poyet and his backroom staff know this as well..stop the excuses man it's pathetic
