They aren't big names mate.Bit harsh, Vaux was mainly the fault of Tesco land grabbing.
and Sunderland has most big names like Debenhams, M&S & Top Shop

Like, they looked into doing something with the Vaux site how long was that 10.11, 12 years.
But none you can buy a decent suit or pair of shoes.!! No John Lewis, No Fenwicks.
Sunderland started to die when Sunderland Council did nowt about Binns closing, eventually replaced by Wilkinsons FFS!!!
Plenty of nice places to live up there, the traffic's not bad, and you can quite easily pop to Leeds if your life is so shallow you need big name shops to make you feel complete.
It's not like they have to live on Cairo Street and shop down Villette road is it? (I'm from Hendon - anyone not from Hendon is barred from joining in with the Hendon bashing)
Lewis and Fenwicks sell the same imported Chinese/ Indian crap you get in any off the peg shop. You're wrong about not being able to buy a decent suit in sunderland..

You're right what you say but I've Gave you a like for your avatar.![]()
I loved that show back in the day. Bought some videos a few years back and it wasn't quite the same somehow. That's the problem with sci fi the future quickly catches up.Been catching up on Blake's 7. Avon seems a good fit for me.
The fact is, no one knows the exact ins & outs of the Vaux sale. It's far too easy for to easy to blame the council for what was a private sale.
Some people on here have claimed was much lower than what the Echo reported the council tried to buy for at the time.
As for M&S they all sell the same stuff, if Sunderland don't have it in, you can order online & pickup.
The fact is it was sold in a private sale under the noises of the council! Did they not think mmmm wonder what going to happen to the old Vaux site? Or did just think when we do finally get it we will build a road round it!!
Yes, you can order on line or if you want it the same day go to the Metro Centre, or Newcastle.
Like I said earlier Sunderland wont improve until the residents realise how bad it is compared to other cities of similar size and populations.
There was a story in the echo (which some one on here posted ages ago) that the council tried to CPO it before the sale went through
Is it though, and I'm talking about Sunderland, not the 'City of'
Go up & down the country & similar type of places like Bolton or Wolverhampton are no better
You might be right they might be bad as well.
But I have watch in dismay how Sunderland has got worse over the last 30 years, while cities like Liverpool, Leeds and Newcastle have grown and prospered.
"Sunderland's population is dropping at one of the fastest rates in Britain, according to new Census 2011 figures"
http://www.itv.com/news/tyne-tees/2...lation-drops-at-third-fastest-rate-in-the-uk/
Yes there is a problem with population decline, but the place is loads better than it was 30 years ago.
You previously mentioned comparing Sunderland with similar size places, so why mention a load of regional capitals with much larger catchment areas, which can easily attract investment? (Yes Newcastle the city used to be smaller than Sunderland the city, but the Tyneside catchment area is a bout or 4 times bigger than Sunderland/Wearside)
Why not mention London, Madrid or New York? They're as equally as daft.
How old are you can you remember 30 years ago, Sunderland was much better 30 years ago,
It used to have its own brewery then!
We will have to agree to disagree 42, enjoy MOTD 2 ,good night.
I'm in my mid 30's & As a child I remember the town being more run down in the 80's than it is now
