It would be a great city if you didnt have to be around the ignorant people, homeless beggers, foreign pick pockets etc. Getting chauffeured to top theatre shows, resteraunts etc would be canny. London too fast and no one wants to know to make me like it and I live pretty close.

It's as simple as this. To get players to come North you have to pay far higher wages to make it a no brainer for them.

When Newcastle and Boro were having their purple patches they were blowing millions on wages and were either getting into massive debt in Newcastles case or by the owner in Boro's.

We have done similar under Drumaville and Short. Paying over the odds has just about kept us up this long.

Now that we are trying to operate within our means it's no surprise we are struggling to attract them.

There is no attraction anymore. A British championship player will sign no problem but established Premier League players will want more.

The only option is to find an angle. Newcastle have found an angle, as much as we hate to admit it. They now have a steady production line going. Foreign players are researched thouroughly and get a shot at the premier league and know it can be stepping stone to bigger clubs.

We need to find an angle going forward to break the coming North problem

Newcastle are in the NE and they have managed to convince some decent players over the last few years to go to the NE. So did Boro in te 90's.

Welbeck was only on loan. The other 3 only played 120 games between them. None of them stayed for longer than 18 months. Cana left for Istanbul, Bent for Birmingham and Gyan for the desert. Doesn't say much for Sunderland.

Yes but they came and they played for the club, and moved into the area before deciding they did not like it. They showed a bit of desire to come in the first place.
Sunderland has 10 months of cold winter mate.

All stayed for a year.

The aforementioned players highlight yet another problem. If you can persuade them to come, they don't hang around long ! Welbeck excepted as he was on loan, none of the others stayed for very long. Quinn used to talk about potential signings being sounded out and researched as much about their character and lifestyle as their footballing ability. I'm sure Congerton is finding out now that there's more to attracting players to SAFC than just agreeing length of contracts and wages.

This is a very good point, I agree the issue is keeping them happy but using Bent as an example as part if the management team when players kicked off demanding moves i'd use Bent as a cautionary tale the grass is not greener so to speak!

Geography is almost irrelevant. If we were contending Euro places and paying high wages, we'd gave no touble attracting players.

nowt wrong with the North the stuck up, presumptuous twats !:mad:

It's not the fact it's north it's the fact Sunderland is a city on it's arse, other Northern cities have moved on from the 80's and centres developed a cosmopolitan feel, take a walk down Blandford street, take a look at the shiney new Primark, the pinnacle of Sunderland's retail heart.......what millionaire would want to move here?

that's a small part of a bigger picture ;)

Manchester Liverpool and Birmingham are shit holes, so apart from London, I can't see location playing the major part in players not wanting to come here.

I take it you haven't been to Liverpool of late? Its far from a shithole and pisses all over Sunderland.

how much did new labour invest in newcastle?
Didn't say Newcastle I said Tyneside!

Wouldn't know the exact figures but they got a canny winking bridge, a pretendy Sydney Opera house thing, a place to hang pictures on the wall that used to be a flour mill, a rusty angel and generally turned the city into a vibrant place......we couldn't even get Vauxies site cleared of rubble!

Find your politics totally confusing. Are you suggesting that New Labour was some sort of clandestine NUFC organisation?
