Press conference at Lord's tomorrow morning. Could it have something to do with this?

I know its the sun, but you never know...

What a great idea. Appoint a captain who isn't good enough to be in the team.

Might be a good time to make this move, Cook's form for Essex in one dayers over the last couple of years has been good. Bit harsh on Strauss but you have to start planning for the next World Cup and he won't be around for that so it's a simple straight replacement at the top of the order, but as usual it's finding an opening partner that will be the problem. Surely they should go back to Davies or Kieswetter?, the latter has started the season in blistering form.

Other announcement is expected to be Broad replacing Collingwood as T20 captain.

Alastair Cook named as England's new one-day cricket captain, Stuart Broad named as new Twenty20 captain.

It's a shit idea, isn't even good enough to get in the team. Typical of the lack of respect we show ODI cricket.

I don't think it's as bad as you make out. He's never really had a prolonged role in the ODI team and if you look at his form and scoring rate for Essex in limited overs games in the last 12 months it stands up very well. He's not Dilshan by any means but he's a good swap with Strauss, I'd be more worried about who opens with him tbh as if we stick with the likes of Prior and Bell up there then we really won't progress as a ODI team.

Fair enough, I'll rephrase what I said - the management don't think he's one of our best eleven players. You're allowed the odd blocker in the side and I'd have him instead of a South African.

It's typical of their thinking though, 'just give him it as practise for the Test side'.

I know what you mean, it's a bit short sighted just to give him it for that sole reason, although with Strauss retiring from ODI's it free's up a space at the top of the order and maybe they thought it was a good chance to see how Cook goes and if he can adapt his game. His scoring rate for Essex recently has been very good and perhaps they think he's ready for another chance. I am wary of him and Trott batting together though

Partnered with a more explosive player like Davies or Kieswetter, we could have a decent opening pair.

There obviously hoping Cook can emulate Strauss and from what ive seen of him recently he should b fine. I just wonder if broad should have been given both captaincies bcos still relying on Cook gettin runs when he comes back.
Also KP must b chuffed right now!

I think its a decent shout actually.

A far better one day player than anyone gives him credit for and perfect replacement for Strauss at the top of the order.
