The SOL was designed with expansion in mind and that's why some areas of the ground feel banal and use semi-permanent materials like breeze block - because they were used with the intention of being discarded and rebuilt.

Its no coincidence that the expanded or principle areas of the ground (i.e. The North Stand and West Stand) are constructed in brick façades with a bit of character and the other two stands are built using corrugated steel.

The SOL is a fine specimen of a stadium and will look symmetrical, beautiful and elegant when it is eventually expanded with an upper tier all the way around. Just look at the example along the road to see what happens when you don't design a stadium with a proper strategy for expansion...

he had a fair point imo

he said when he looked around he could have been at boro southampton etc etc

new grounds do lack character / tradition

he is now waxing lyrical about roker being a 'proper' ground

All new stadiums have something in common, it's true. Generally, it's an unobstructed view, good facilities, easy access etc. By default, they all may look a bit similar but that is because architects make the stadiums with these requirements in mind. The SOL is a magnificent stadium. I do not think you will find one SAFC fan who would rather move back to a Roker, and I am old enough to have been to move matches at Roker than the SOL.

Frankly, I think its only the fans of the clubs that have not moved grounds that bang on about 'character and tradition'. The Emirates and Eastlands are miles better than Highbury and Maine Road for example. I doubt any Arsenal and City fans wish they had stayed put. Liverpool and Everton are desperate to move into new grounds. Spurs and West Ham want the new Olympic Stadium. The new Wembley is on a different level to the old one. Derby's new ground and Bolton's are far superior to what they left behind. The Mags had no choice and were left to redevelop the Sport Direct into its current monstrous shape.

It is a much better place to watch football, if the football is shite.

Would I swap 8,000 at Roker in the bottom half of League One for what we have now? Part of me would say yes.

Would hate to leave Anfield, don't think I could face going to a brand new whopper dome. Atmosphere is bad enough as it is but add another 20 000 jester hat wearing, camera-clicking day trippers phoning their mates every five minutes and I don't think I could stand it.
Hopefully the new owners will seriously look into redeveloping Anfield.

Slagging off SOL as a Lego stadium, bland and lacking in any character. Discussing in the phone-in from 10am whether new stadiums should be built or current "old" grounds redeveloped to retain history.

Get on and defend our home!! 08717 22 33 44
Fat tosser should have been drowned at birth. Sadly they couldn't find a lake large enough.

It's all about corporate. If you can't fit in another 20,000 people paying £150 for a few prawn sandwiches then you'll be fucked. There is no way you can do that redeveloping Anfield.

Maybe not 20,000 but we are struggling to sell out midweek games as it is.
