you can in theory just not authentic on different table

go for a standard pub table... mates will be happier with that

If you are paying in a pool hall where you pay for a table by the hour, I much prefer 9-ball as you get a load more games.

If you are playing on a table with a coin slot where you pay per game, then English is better as the games last loads longer

aye, but the balls are bigger too so cancels it out a bit.

(though the pocket size:ball size ratio is bigger on an american table)
