Police ready to take hard line

Think it all depended on what time you got there and walked up mate. Talking to @DufraisFTM in the ground and him and his dad saw nothing either. I was on same train and large group with @Father Jack Hackett and we saw a canny bit. Think we were one of the last trains/metros through with most of our lot, so maybe more and more mags were out as more of our lot came through, so there was more waiting on the streets.
The difference between seeing bother and not could've been literally a minute or two. Like you say we saw not a single punch thrown. The 'welcoming committee' was almost non-existant when compared to previous years. No surprises there considering there wasn't a line of police from which behind they could have thrown their insults and offer people out.

The biggest commotion we saw was when we somehow ended up in the doorway of Gotham Town. We ended up on that side of the roadworks while there was a large group of Sunderland on the other side. Loads of them with veins popping out of their heads shouting 'Mackem Bastaads' from behind the safety of the railings. We had to bite our tongues mind and it was a little bit intimidating. But we just walked straight past and it was over in seconds really.

Then as we walked past the bars around the Centre for Life and turned right onto whatever that road is, it was like a ghost town. The silence was weird. You normally have the usually numpties walking alongside the escort and loads lining the various streets adjacent. All we saw was a few people making their way to the ground, minding their own business.

It obviously got a little bit busier when we got to the corner of the Gallowgate and John Hall stand. There were loads kicking about there and we had to make our way through them with not a lot of police presence really. There were a few insults back and forth and it could have went up if anyone wanted it to. But my take was 99% of people are like me and just want to go to the match and enjoy themselves. There's a glass fronted bar there and low and behold the windows were full of Mags red in the face waving arms around doing their best Danny Dyer impressions.

I can't comment on anything that happened after because I hopped straight on one of the buses, I usually can't be arsed with the hassle of it. I think I've only ever walked back to the train station after (well as it was still being played) the 5-1 and that's the most bother I've ever seen.

All football hooligans are total f***ing sad acts.
Think what some, including myself are saying, is that it doesn't take a hooligan to get in trouble with this policing e approach. Mentioned a few times, my mate got punched from behind through there in December outside central after the match. The lad ran straight off, but if me mate or any of us caught him we would be in trouble. If someone comes at you or your mates, you will defend yourself and each other. That could see you in trouble with the police. Easily done and the walk up to your place, the edge and threat of something happening was always there when we went up. Which was just emphasised to me with what happened to my mate.

Yes 100%. They want to be in control and dictate things such as kick off times.

Why though? If there's no bother at this one, what's the motivation for wanting an earlier kick off? It's more difficult to get cops on the ground for an early kick off than a late one.

You'd have been in trouble if you chased him and battered the lad who punched your mate- if your standing there defending yourself, well, it's self defence. Think Tony Martin or whatever he was called, the bloke who shot the burglar in the back who was running away.

Its just a natural reaction though isn't it? Not a "hooligan" thing to do? That's all my point was, doesn't take a hooligan to get in trouble. I would never just walk up and hit a mag, but would of swung for him if he never ran and Sunday could of been very different.

That's fair enough tbh.

Footage would disappear. The police would then just say you were fighting. Youd say self defence. And then its word against word.

What footage? The testimony of your witnesses wouldn't disappear would it?

The coppers did a really good job at last December's derby match imo.

Didn't feel at all under threat walking back to Central station afterwards.

I think they did a shit job and got very lucky. We took a wrong turn away from the majority of our lot and ended up heading through Bath Lane towards Central Station. There was a fair few of us, maybe around 100 or so. Once we got to Bath Lane, there was a stand off, fans just throwing insults at each other then one mag came abit too close and ended up getting hit. Inevitably, that led to a larger group fighting, then Police having to rush over, even more from Central Station. There was hardly any police when it initially went up abit. If more people really wanted bother, it would have well and truly kicked off-felt nothing like being 'safe'. I was with me sister, so was more worried about getting her out of any potential trouble.

Afterwards, we had to walk down the side paths and apparently past some of Newcastle's 'hooligan' pubs. Hugely outnumbered while we just had to walk past; they knew we were sunderland fans. Once again, if they wanted to, it could have got out of hand. We got to the station and police were still running around the place trying to sort the mess out.

Aye, someone might say 'why'd you take the wrong turn?' Quite easily, the fact there was no escort meant you didn't know the exact designated route and tbh, I know fuck all about my way around newcastle. At the end of the day, it's the polices job to protect the public, which includes football fans.

If similar happens in our City centre, where it's a lot more compact and there'll be more football fans to shoppers ratio, there could be loads of trouble.

I reckon they will do as they did through there in December, let fights happen then nick the person who starts it plus the one who retaliates after taking a smack.
I remember during Everton at home some of their fans were running up to families and shouting abuse and spitting an stuff. Nobody reacted but I always thought why are the police even allowing that to happen. Surely that behaviour is justifiable to twat the fuckers

I havnt really followed this but are the mags getting designated trains/metros or just a free reign to travel how they want?

Personally I think the general apathy of both fans this season has taken the edge off the derby this time

The top and bottom of your experience through there seems the same as mine, although you did see an actual fight so that's more than me. If people wanted it it would have been worse. I 100% agree. However, people clearly didn't want it and it was proven that the vast, vast majority can be trusted to act like reasonable adults. You're always going to get idiots on both sides and a fight here and there, but most people just want to go to the match and see their team win.

Been on local news tonight mags can do as they please like us at theres in December, only difference is they have put 2 metros on for them from central to st peters, but nothing stopping them going anywhere they want and at anytime.

and that ladies and gentlemen is the common sense thing to do.
Any sensible grown up adult mags can make their own way, have a pint etc.
All the nawtey Danny Dyer wannabes still get their non official escort with a police presence so they can boonce aboot with their arms out wide shouting such things as "howay then have a go at wa" whilst all along knowing the police are handily placed to save them.
