In my spare time I've been using this expansion of Google maps which allows you to look at various planets and their moons.

Whilst looking at Pluto's moon of Charon, I discovered all of its geographical features have been named after things from Sci-Fi and Fantasy series'

You've got a Spock Crater, Mordor Macula, Vader Crater, Tardis Chasma.

Fascinating stuff.

Slightly OT but when Nasa developed the first space shuttle, they threw it open to the public to choose the name. The most popular choice was Enterprise after Star Trek.

NASA were not pleased as they wanted a more 'fitting' name but they had to go with it. They then went onto name the service shuttles themselves.

When Challenger exploded and they made its replacement they again opted to let the public name it. However they were worried that the new shuttle would be called the Millennium Falcon so this time the public were only allowed to pick from a set list with Endeavour being the winner
