Players that were class when young but got crap as they got older?

When you think about which top class players in those days enjoyed a drink it's scary. Puts me in mind of Bob Newton [Hartlepool] who used to go for a beer before games in a nearby pub & Stan Bowles who used to do his pre-match in the bookies!
Was it Clough or Taylor who said they wished Bowles could pass a bookies like he could pass a football?

Can't believe Colback hasn't had a mention.... he was rated better than Henderson by a lot on here and as a youngun there really wasn't much difference.
Might’ve been rated highly by the fans but essentially has played at the same level his entire career (low prem/ championship). He was just lucky to get paid £50k a week for a good few years for the privilege

different kettle of fish these days
And not necessarily for the best imo. The characters in the game then were the stuff of dreams to young lads. Well, they were to me anyway.

Another of Brian's top notch quotes iirc.
George Best, the best player of his time but pressed the self destruct button far too soon.
There's the prime example. His reputation carried him for years but teams signed him for the chance of a flash of brillance that sold tickets & boosted attendances.

owen was in boozer night before league cup final, canny bloke, said to him I can remember when you were average. :D

I've met Michael on a couple of occasions through racing. Many say he's boring, I find him a very interesting bloke. Very knowledgable bloke when it comes to both horses and football.

Whilst obviously nowhere near his superstardom when he moved to Madrid, he was still an intelligent footballer who knew where the back of the net was. I still think he'd have been a good signing for us when we had conversations with him, ultimately he signed for Stoke.

Michael owen
Wayne Rooney to an extent
Joe cole
Pedro
Fernando torres
Bojan krkic
I thought Rooney would make an appearance here. Its a fair point, but I think it's more that he set such a standard that everyone expected that level all the way through his career. So not so much that he was poor in the latter stages of his career, he just wasn't able to maintain the monumental levels he'd set as a youngun

Fitness wasn’t good enough, was always a big lad but he was carrying too much weight later on, don’t think he was one for living the athlete lifestyle
