Pickford

I agree with all of that. However he does not look as great as people claim... Is my only point.

Goals aside (not his fault), his first half performance was quite poor. Too much parry and punchcard when you'd expect a keeper, a good one, an England U21 to stop and gather. I'm perfectly happy to put his first half down to nerves and I don't think he's shyte, but he was almost at fault for two simple goals concede in the first 50 mins when I first posted and was only saved from his errors by two goal line clearances.

I think of Given when he came on loan. Yes Pickford is against tougher opposition, but looking at him and his choices and I would say he's some way behind Given at his age.

Happy for him, decent performance. Not great. Nothing to suggest he will be. Decent. Well done though, tough debut.

Sunday, 21st January 1996 in a 0-0 draw at Leicester City, That was Givens first game for us, Can you remind me about how Given did in that game, did he have a shaky start? Did he punch any he should have caught?

Fact is you spoke to soon, against a very good team and behind a very poor defence I thought the lad showed enough to give me hope we might have a canny keeper on our hands, if we dont break him. Ohh and his passing was way better than our others keepers and some of our outfield players.

He's taller than Shay Given and look how of a class keeper he ended up as.

I thought he had a fantastic debut despite the scoreline.. Looked composed, distribution spot on. Just a shame it was away to Arsenal, but you know you had a good game when Petr Cech congratulates you at the end.
What did Cech say, mate?

Ok clever arse, tell us what he did wrong from a goalkeeping stand point, one dodgy kick but the rest as far as i saw was a solid first game for us.

I actually thought his kicking and distribution was excellent. One dodgy kick is easily forgiven. I think he parried too often first half on simple enough shots when you could expect a gather.

There were two clear poor goalkeeping decisions that went past him. One on about 35 mins and one on about 50 mins that had to be cleared off the line.

They were not hard blocks. However, first game nerves. Fine. Last 40 mins he played well, but nothing spectacular.

I hope that is precise enough.

Some people seem to have a comprehension problem on this thread. I have not declared him useless or a rubbish goalkeeper. I said he played poorly first 50 mins, and that's by standards I would expect. He finished well last 40 and looks a decent young keeper, however he did not look the 'great' keeper everyone professes. That doesn't mean he won't be, just that he provably didn't look it today.

Some of these comments are beyond belief.

His left back was quite simply absent. PVA is not a full back. He gave his goal zero protection and gave acres of space for Arsenal to take leisurely shots. Poor bloody Pickford was totally unprotected by him.

Jones on the right was usually in place but had to pullout all of the stops to guard against Giraud. As a Centre back he was worse than useless.

Coates flattered to deceive. Most times when he guarded a ball back to Pickford even I had no idea what he would do, step by step. And I had the perspective and overview of a TV camera. Without O'Shea,Cattermole and occasional cover from protective forwards there would have been no protection for the kid.

When O'Shea went off the already vulnerable defence collapsed.

Pickford fought through all of this. He had no chance with any of the goals. His distribution was far, far better than I have seen from an SAFC goalie for years. Our forwards got better balls from him than from our midfield. His positioning was good, his leadership was surprisingly polished.

But NO. Let's not encourage him. It makes far better sense to say he is useless, with our two world class goalies already in place.

After all he is a young Sunderland player, and we must follow out long tradition of saying he is useless, the conference is too good for him, he had a crap game and let three goals in. And most significantly he is one of us and therefore shite. (See Micky Gray). That way we can be sure he will fail.

All of this rubbish makes me puke. He had a good game behind a poor defence against a superb team.

Some people on here need to grow up or fuck off.

Indeed I spoke too soon. His last 40 mins were good. Not brilliant, but good under the circumstances.

But seriously there are some clowns on here who think that a view of how he is doing part way through a game represents a final game opinion.

Dear me. Glad someone has some comprehension of the timeline of a thread.

I'm at the game and I want him to be good, but actually he has been very poor. Compare him to Given when he came on loan as a youngster and Pickford is light years behind.

Yes I know that was championship and this is Arsenal but most stuff he's been presented with today should have been simple stuff. Twice, easy saves have beaten him and had to be cut out by defenders behind him.

That and he seems reluctant to hold onto a ball

This. He looked dodgy as owt to me. Take the rose tinted glasses off everyone

Ah, did he just congratulate him on the field? I thought he might have said something in an interview.
from what i seen he mouthed something like 'well done, you did well there' and handed him his shirt
dependent what your agenda Cech said 'i was expecting more from what i had heard, Shay Given was better' and handed him his shirt as if to say, you'll never be fit to wear this

You keep changing your mind to be fair. You now say "decent", before that you said "quite poor"

He had a good game man

No. I said at 50 mins he was poor. Look at the time of the post, don't make the same error some clowns have in here. Watch the game and I think I am probably right at that point. He had a pretty good last 40. Happy to put the early performance down to nerves and a tough debut. Never once blamed him for the goals, been consistent there.

I maintain that his debut was decent overall, nothing more than that. Well done, he should be proud. What a game to make a debut in. He did not shame himself, however a decent debut, not a 'tremendous' or 'great' one.
