Pickford

As someone that doesn't really care where the playing staff are from, I think:

Pickford did fine, but he wasn't Lev Yashin like some people on this thread would have you believe. Most of his saves were regulation stuff and I was amazed reading the match thread people were saying stuff like 'great save' when commenting on shots with little power that went straight at him.

He did make one smart save in the second half when he rushed off the line and closed down the angle, but apart from that he just did everything one would expect a goalkeeper to do. I mean, come on, if he let in any of those shots it would have been a Rob Green vs USA style blooper!

100% this, but I was impressed that he didn't look out of place and he did well with his kicking, he also seemed to have some good positioning sense. with time I hope he will be a cracking keeper for us, my main worry is what will happen if he is played too soon and takes a beating, would that damage his long term prospects?

But as a number 2 he is a fantastic choice, frees up some wages to reinvest in other spots but who do we keep from pants or vito?

Never been impressed when I seen him play for the reserves, all be it a few year ago. His kicking though is absolutely tremendous. An attribute we have not seen in a safc keeper for a long time. Hopefully his shot stopping and handling of crosses are decent.

He did well IMO. Much better than Mannone.

I don't give a fuck about this "his distribution is good" bandwagon everyone is jumping on just cos Gary Bennet and a couple of pundits have mentioned it . He's there primarily to stop shots and reduce the number of goals we concede and apart from that , in our current predicament, who the fuck is there for him to distribute to ? and who is then able to do something with it ?

The idiocy is coming from you though. My comments were made after your first few posts. The first u said pretty much he's pretty poor, then when a few pulled u on it u started back tracking saying he was average overall.

Haven't read the full thread (after my comment) but flicking through it seems you've took it on yourself to deflect your comments by having a go at others, writing essay length replies, calling everyone else idiots and at one point using different coloured text to highlight different points.

Get a grip man and stop taking it so personal. You've had a mare with your first comment and almost everyone who's commented has pulled u up on it. Take it
In the chin, Blame it on the booze like the rest of us would (even if it weren't) ;)

I posted my first comment after the first 50 minutes when he had been less than average. People may not agree with that assessment of the first 50, but it certainly does not amount to a decision to write him off on my part. After that (for the last 40 mins) he played quite well. In fact I posted to that effect after my initial post, almost immediately when he did make a good save. I take complaint at some people reading a post observing something part way through as a final view and disregarding everything else. Is it fair to call those people idiots, yes. Was I drunk and taking the arguing too seriously, yes. Are they still idiots, yes.

Good young keeper he has areas to develop but he's what 21 year old making his first senior appearance against the best team in the league.

All of our keepers have weaknesses and strengths in fact every keeper does no one is perfect. He has plenty of time to develop his game and should be given the chance to do so as he is going to get better and overtake mannone and pants quite soon.

I think what people were laughing at was your reasoning for him being poor in the first 50 minutes. Did you have 15 pints pre-match?

Must have been at least 20 to come out with that shite, however, I still doubt that as his spelling was still cany!

10 Trenches Deep you should just give up trying to defend your earlier comments. What is the point and how is it even possible to catergories a players potential after one game? All that matters, is the reality of the situation. A young player who is learning the game & nowhere near the finished article made his debut for his boyhood club. This is where as fans we should be getting behind the lad. This goes for all fans. No need to pigeon hole the lad as this or that, just support him. That is the only way as fans we can help him hopefully progress to be a very good player. I know him personally & know that he would love nothing more but to become our number one. However he knows it will take time & a lot of hard work. He is learning all of the time. Here is a nice little interview from him.. http://m.sunderlandecho.com/sport/s...-i-want-to-be-sunderland-number-one-1-7666490

As a friend I obviously want him to do really well but I won't sit here and tell you all he's the next big thing & future England number one. What is the point? I hope those things go on to happen but there are too many factors involved. We need to take each performance on face value & understand the lad is young & learning all the time.

From Saturday's performance it is clear that the person who's opinion actually matters (BSA) was happy with his performance. Me personally, thinks that we didn't lose because Jordan was in goal and that if any of the other two keepers played it would not of made a difference to the result. He dealt with the occasion very well & gave us a a glimpse of what he could bring to the team with his good distribution. Hopefully he gets another go sometime soon, or gets to go back out on loan near the end of the window if BSA feels that chance won't come. The only way he will get better is by playing games. We seem to have a good player on our hands so let's nurture him and support him as best as we can. Give the lad a chance to fulfill his full potential, whatever that may be.......

As far as I'm concerned he played well enough against Arsenal, and well enough for England U21s and Preston to warrant selling either Pants or Mannone and letting him fight it out with whichever stays for the number 1 spot.

It will save us money and help strengthen elsewhere too.

If SA believes he is ready for first team football I have no problem with putting him in. I don't think Mannone is good enough and I'm one of the few that doesn't rate Pants too highly. If selling one of those means we can strengthen somewhere else then I think it's worth it

It is a gamble though, playing a youngster in such an important position when he doesn't have much experience. Even more so with us being in a relegation battle

He looked good all through the game for a 21 making his debut at the Emirates. Just compare him to the young lad who started for Newcastle a week or so ago for example. However, for anyone to say the shirt is his we can get rid of Vito and Pants is crazy. They are both proven solid premier keepers. I wouldn't be having kittens if we sold one or the other over the transfer window and kept Pickford as no2 but equally you could argue his career might benefit from another 1/2 season at Preston rather than watching Pants try to kick the ball. There are no more cup games for him to play in after all.

Sam will definitely look to shift one of Mannone or Pantilimon this window, i dont buy that Pickford is there to provide competiton to the other 2. He will either be first choice or on the bench for rest of season.
