Phones In The Workplace

Afternoon all,

What’s your companies stance on mobile phones in your work place ?

Since I’ve had to bring new blood in it’s a problem I’ve had to tackle head on,telling lads to leave their phones in their bags until bait time, threats of the sack, etc etc.
It’s a real addiction to some people and they can’t put them down, hence me implementing draconian measures.I’ve been think “what the fu k have these been allowed to get away with elsewhere?”

It then got me thinking of this place, the amount of people who post during the day who have 9-5 jobs is mind blowing. How do you get away with it?

Thanks now.

It is an issue in any employment
In certain jobs your phone is a usefull tool .
Customers WhatsApp me orders, we share pictures of items needed etc . Also messaging ,it let's busy people reply when they can rather than a phone ringing . Elsewhere in the building we've put a full block on them as people were working 1 handed ( manual work ) . We have a few gamblers too and they were on it non stop
Regards on here
I do it myself while " at work " but I'm doing 9 to 10 hours with 30 min break if I'm lucky ,so I just drop out when the moment arises then back on it

As a teacher it’s the one thing that drives me nuts. Kids aren’t meant to have them on but I don’t think I’ve taught a lesson in the last 10 years where a phone hasnt gone off.

Kids are addicted to them

You’re facing a losing battle, just worry about the graft getting done. If it’s not then start to worry about phone usage.

Have mine in work but always on silent…
If it rings I would always step outside to take the call

At Nissan at first if you even got seen with it out of your pocket outside of bait it was straight to personnel they have now realised they can’t do fuck all about it except tell you to put it away as personnel would be sacking everyone

We focus more on outcomes. How you manage your time is, to some extent up to you, as long as what needs to be done is done well and on time, that’s fine. It‘s not about 9-to-5, although people do have to be available to support operational incidents.

We also need people to be aware of the area we’re working in so they’re encouraged to read widely on the topic and get involved in communities.

And, to be honest, as we’re involved in delivering content online it would be daft if we proscribed it’s use in the workplace (something that would be hard to do as we’re remote workers most of the time).

Can appreciate that that isn’t going to be the case everywhere.

Surely unless you have a written policy that clearly states you cannot use a personal phone during working hours, you're on dodgy ground threatening people with the sack?

Sack them all
Most use the excuse about what happens if there’s an emergency at home Kids school etc
Same as 40 year ago wait until bait time
If everyone who is caught is docked 15 mins then message will get through

Can’t do it not possible would be too many numbers over personnel

Absolutely essential - in use all day and weekends. On silent all the time. Mine has never been turned off for years.

Keep mine on my desk but on silent

Post on here and browse using my laptop when at work
I write reports on my phone as I do my work, so it's essential!

I reply to emails, approve payments, check queries from my phone when away from my desk

Written policies and contracts haven't reached the great outdoors man :D

Phones at work quickly became a blurred area. I have to use mine as part of my work IT security where my password is periodically changed or has to be confirmed, yet the official policy will be no phones - not that I have checked lately.

In manual work I can see phones being a real hazard and a risk to the owner of the phone and those working with them. Being draconian makes sense in one way but it might be better to talk to staff and say why you @Gillythedilf are concerned and agree some ground rules together. In the short term you have a solution but long term it's a problem that won't go away and is likely to get worse as thenext generation are even more phobe dependent. Either way you inow it's something you need all employees to know about and agree to.
