Phil Hughes fighting for his life

Hope the guy who bowled the delivery is arrested, could potentially be facing a murder charge.

A bouncer is a delivery designed to hit a batsman around the chest and head, Its dangerous, violent and should be banned.

Thoughts are with Phil Hughes, poor bastard.

Can see where you are coming from saying the bouncer should be banned from now on.

However to hope the bowler is arrested is a ridiculous thing to say, especially considering it was not banned when he bowled that ball.

FFS if the bouncer is banned this puts the game even more in favour of the batsman. I say this as a batsman (who incidentally has been hit in the head before) but to ban it is rediculous.

Test players know the risks (as they do in any sport). This is a freak accident no more than that.

Its possible that helmets may need to offer better protection in the most vulnerable areas.

Utter bollox.

1. Second serious head injury from bouncers in three weeks.
2. It was Sheffield Shield not test cricket
3. The laws of cricket that apply at Shield level also apply at amateur level
4. If you want to make life tougher for batsmen, how about legalising the double bounce bowl, relax chucking rules etc?
5. All about conservative attitudes not making it harder for batsmen
6. Fair point about helmets

I love the cricket foeum. One lad makes a daft comment and everyone politly explains to him why he's wrong. Well apart from Whed but thats to be expected.

For what its worth, Hughes doesnt play the short delivery well and this has been an accepted tactic of bowling against him since it waa realised. Maybe batsmen will spend more time netting against short bowling than nice juicy half volleys.

The current
law on short pitched bowling is about right. We need it in our game. It makes some batsmen uncomfortable whilst others thrive on it. As a batsman, a shit one, pace has never bothered me but someone tall and dropping it in short of a length has always unsettled me.

A big lesson, rather than jailing people is for helmet manufacturers to go back to the drawing board and for batsmen to remember that wearing one wont always save them

Bouncers are part of a bowler's armoury. They are an exciting part of the game. Had Abbott bowled a beamer I could understand a bit of flak but this was a legitimate delivery and the bowler meant no malice. In fact reports are that he is totally in bits at present.

^ This. If you banned the bouncer you'd have to come up with a new method of dismissal to make it interesting

Quite right and it seems the helmet manufacturers are looking at just that and those that set standards in such things should do likewise.

Your having a laugh. Will the F1 go around the track at 30mph? Life is a risk and most sports have risks

Cricket is a challenge between bat and ball, take away the opportunity to bowl short will just result in the batsmen having a massive advantage.

Maybe should just play with a Tennis Ball then no one will get hurt

Bloody arrested, have a look at yourself

It was an accident. Feel for the lad, terrible episode but its a dangerous sport at times.

Points to the need for improved equipment ie helmets.

Awful news hope he pulls through. See they interviewed Peter Lever whohit Ewan Chatfield and saying what the bowler Weill be feeling as he went through it himself

Has there not been any update on the poor fella ?

Interesting debate on helmet improvements, had they been imposed last week many would have cried health and safety gone mad, now it appears essential

Any talk of outlawing bouncers is ludicrous, and thankfully would never be entertained by the powers that be. As another poster says, should F1 cars be limited to 30mph, should boxers not be allowed to hit faces etc etc?

Crap analogy. Formula 1 is probably the most proactive sport for changing its rules to improve safety (not to mention competition, emissions etc.)

Explain how a beamer or bodyline - both of which were legal at one point, and give the bowler an (intimidatory) advantage against the batsman - 'aren't cricket' but a bouncer is?

Cricket fans (especially the English) simply don't like change. See attitudes on here to T20.

Apparently Hughes wasn't wearing a recent model helmet, he was wearing a one a few years old

Err..it was a 2013 helmet. Hardly Dennis Amiss's motorbike lid.

Sad that the manufacturer (Masuri) are looking to blame Phil Hughes for this. No doubt more concerned about litigation and profits than the lad's livelihood.

Hughes is in a coma and everyone here in Oz just hopes there's better news later tonight/tomorrow morning.
He took the full force on the neck area and as someone mentioned earlier the helmet is an older style with less protective guards built into the base, very sad and hope better news soon.

It seems he is in an incided coma I guess to allow for some healing to take place and when they judge the time is right they'll attempt to bring him out if it and then I suppose we'll hear more.

This looks very similar to Michael Schumacher's skiing accident who hit the back of his head on a rock and the docs put him into an induced coma.

It's not good though.
