So he HAS put a foot wrong ?Since he came back into the side I don't think he's put a foot wrong. He doesn't look great on set pieces when we bring everyone back and pin him in the six yard box.

I get what he means, he’s shite at crosses into the box but one of his saves tonight was outstandingMixed bag?
He's not shite at crosses, he's a cracking young keeper who's getting better and better.I get what he means, he’s shite at crosses into the box but one of his saves tonight was outstanding
What more at you wanting from a 22 year old?I think was an entirely mixed bag tonight. Decent but I’m left wanting more
I rate the lad but he has me worried when the ball is crossed into the box and he stays rooted to his line. Just needs to have a bit more confidence to use his size, and come and claim a few more balls.
Exactly.Bring back Jason Steele.
Some lovely sidewinders last night. He done very well last night, getting better every game. He's doing smashing.
Let's not micro criticise everything. Plenty of outfielders misplace a pass or make little mistakes. A young keeper doesn't need groans if he releases a ball a second longer than expected or a stray long range pass for example.
Definitely.Exactly.
Best keeper we've had since Pickford.
And hes only 22 and will get better and better
Best game he's had so far I reckon. His reactions are superb, especially since he's a big lad. Distribution was good too, few of those long kicks out were very reminiscent of Pickford.Excellent tonight, one of the most impressive performances I've seen from him.
You don’t think he’s poor at crosses? It’s undoubtedly the weakest part of his game.theres something inherent in some Sunderland fans that they just need to say that our keepers are both poor at crosses and poor at distribution, regardless of what they actually see on the pitch

Definitely.
I've said before it's natural to drop some clangers, especially his age. He's playing at the highest level he's ever played at and he's doing great.
I get the things lads are saying he needs to improve on, no issues at all. He's 22, not gonna hit his prime for another 7/8 years. Think how good he can be?
I trust him. His quick sidewinder passes will get us goals, like Pickford did/does. Dodgy slippery conditions last night, not easy at all.
Agree but keeping (in relation to crosses) is all about decision making. Don’t know if it’s a confidence thing but fairly regularly comes and gets nowhere near or stays when it is around 5 or 6 yards from his line. It's decision making at times. He knows he can't come for them all, no keeper can. Sometimes he's makes the odd fumble, ike most keepers, sometimes he takes with ease, sometimes he doesn't come and he maybe should, etc etc.
He's doing very well and there's some ridiculously critical posters on here with some ludicrous ideas about goalkeepers.
I don't think he is actually poor at crosses either. I think the problem is experience has already shown he can't come for everything and hes tried to reign it in. His issues seem to be when to and when not to at the moment - and on occasions he's been caught in between.

It’s not a dig at him as such as realistically he’s not going to be great at everything at his age or he would have the top clubs in Europe after him. He is a great prospect but I think that is the area that needs the most work. Shot stopping I can’t remember him making a single mistake for us (touch wood).
I think it’s in comparison to his overall game though? Probably not shite but he’s below average at crosses, it’s not just the ones he comes and misses (was 1 last night) it’s when he sticks rooted to the spot when he should just come and claim (see Watford 2nd goal). Of course he makes the right decision more often than not but it needs to be a greater percentage than what it currently is long term.no. i think over the course of a few games he might be a bit hesitant on one or two, or in the odd instance come for one and not get near it, but i think peoples natural perception is to only remember the iffy ones, and disregard the vast majority of crosses where he makes the right decision.
of course, he has loads of room improvement, but he is from a current starting position of being a very good, reliable, solid no nonsense championship keeper. at the age of 22.
on this thread we've had people say he's 'shite at crosses' , 'makes people nervous' and is 'poor with the ball at his feet'.
none of this is true (if you use the base standard as that of an average championship keeper)
I agree like, by no means saying he should be great at everything now. I just think it’s pointless saying he’s great at everything and not discussing any areas for improvement. It is about decision making, but that only comes with experience and some keepers won't leave their line and rely on dominant headers - Pickford isn't exactly dominant in that respect.
It also isn't helped at the moment when we we're lacking a bit height throughout the team. It means there's more emphasis on him to come and at times he just cant. when we only have a couple of dominant headers in the side and they have to mark space in danger areas then the opposition can work around that if they have more like bith Preston and Blackpool had, which creates indecision for many of our players when defending corners.
