I’d do the same . I’ve managed to get under 20:30 twice and both times ended up with torn muscles. I might have one last attempt to get that sort of time but approaching my mid 40s I might have to accept it’s not for me.
I was about 43 when I had my last attempt at half decent times. The aim was a sub 40 mins 10k, I got to about 40m 30s on a hilly course and then I couldn’t get interested enough to enter a race.

I am back to anything between 7 and 9 minute miles but I much prefer the longer and steady runs. Do what you enjoy.
