Parking in a child parking space

It's funny how angry some people get over this, fair enough people without children shouldn't be using them but it's hardly a massive hardship if parents have to park in another spot. My parents managed perfectly well without child parking spaces as did their parents and their parents before them.
back in the days when cars were smaller, there was less of them, car seats weren't invented, seatbelts weren't compulsory and kids sat where they liked you mean?

Exactly this. Mine are grown up now but the car seats were the main thing, you have to open the door wide enough to be able to strap them in. There wasn't even seatbelts in the back seats when I was a kid so talking about how people managed back then is totally irrelevant.

Yep if you were lucky enough to have a car. My mam didn't drive so had to manage us with our pushchairs on the bus (which didn't lower or have a designated push on space) all the bags and then the same on the way back but this time with all of the shopping, just got on with it. Now people are up in arms and ranting on social media because they've had to park the X5 more than an inch from the entrance in a smaller space, it really isn't that big of a deal.

I will never understand the mentality of “things were shit for my Mam when I was a kid and she was expected not to complain, so no-one is allowed any help on anything at all now”.

You can’t put a baby seat into a car without opening the door wide. People who park in the extra width spaces who don’t need to are arseholes.

Things weren't shit for my mam it's how it was it's just for perspective on how much easier things are now and the entitlement of these people who have never had it so easy. Agree with you about people parking in spaces they don't need.

They are entitled to those spaces though. That’s what the spaces are there for.

I know you wouldn’t say similar if someone had needlessly taken the last disabled space, so presumably this is based on your own belief that P&C spaces are needless, rather than the reality that they’re extremely helpful for parents.
Every space should be the same size as the family size spaces

Jayden, 24, lives with his Mam, would still park his 2014 Golf Type R over two spaces though. And he’d still be a ****.

Not needless they are obviously there for a reason and I agree people shouldn't be using them who don't need them. My point is it's just an inconvenience in the grand scheme of things.

Would abusers of the system be as keen to park in the parent and child spaces if they were at the far reaches of the car park, problem solved.

I agree, I would never park in one without a child. With a disabled space you could genuinely be causing someone a hardship who physically needs to park there.
Some of the most self entitled people I've met are the parents who think they're the first generation of people to ever have children when in reality it's probably never been easier.

What makes you think that?

As others have pointed out the legal requirements for seating children have changed and whilst safer, they are more onerous. There's also the fact that as a result of increasing population/increasing drivers/increasing reliance on supermarkets (another conversation entirely) supermarket carparks are pretty wildly different (riskier) than the 70s or 80s.

So, you think that they are there for a reason and that people who don't need them shouldn't use them, but parents are entitled whingers for saying that too? WTF?

Eh I'm not against the parking spaces and indeed inconsiderate arseholes shouldn't be in them it's the overreaction to an inconvenience that makes me laugh.
The entitled whingers isn't just about parking, the arguments on buses over pushchair spaces is embarrassing and for some reason on the Facebook scammers page it's often mentioned 'av got 3 bairns in the house' which is of no relevance to the scam.

It's a bit shit that they have to have less disabled spaces along the front of supermarkets to accomodate P&C spaces. My wife (no) chose to have kids 30-odd years ago when these P&C spaces barely existed, if at all. She didn't choose her disability...

Less spaces, or splitting the amount fairly between disabled users and parent/child? Both are there for a reason, to help those who need extra space.

30odd years ago makes no sense as a comparison either. Much fewer cars on the roads, so less congested in car parks as an example. Plus, as someone else pointed out, cars were generally smaller so needed less space.

The same people park in disabled as well as parent and child, as they basically don’t care about anyone but themselves.

You've missed the point I was making. I'm not against P&C spaces per se, I'm saying that they should not be allocated to the detriment of disabled drivers. Disabled people should have priority because they have a medical condition that makes mobility difficult. All the spaces directly outside supermarkets should be reserved for badge holders.
Is it too much to ask that P&C spaces are allocated in the next closest row?

If I'm with my wife (no) in a packed car park and the only space outside the shop is P&C, I'm probably going to park in it if no one else is waiting for it. P&C spaces are a courtesy offered by some outlets, disabled spaces are a legally enforced right.

Cars are bigger than 30 years ago, yes. So are the parking spaces. There were fewer cars on the road, yes. The car parks were also much smaller, so it's a fair comparison.

I'd rather they were a bit further away. It's rather walk further and be able to get my daughter in and out of a the car easier. It is pure laziness for those who park in them without kids because they are typically closer, remove that as a draw and there is no excuse.

It’s the entitlement of other people. To be honest, I’m sick of it, on and off the roads. People constantly breaking little rules and inconveniencing other people, because they see themselves as too important.

I’m sure your parents did manage just fine, but that’s hardly an argument for not having something, if it offers an improvement on what went before.

If someone inconvenienced you, by breaking the rules, and you’d let that wash over you then fair enough. I’d say if someone parked in a disabled spot without a blue badge they deserve a f***ing good hiding, as a bare minimum. A brick through their car window would also be richly deserved.

Parking in a parent and child space, maybe just a deep, deep scratch down the side of their car. Hopefully an expensive and very noticeable one.
Slightly different but one of our neighbours was offended that someone was parked badly so pulled her new xc90 into the space meaning they couldn't really open their doors at all.

Came out the shop to see the car was gone and she had a massive scratch down the side. Modern day karma.
