Pallion Shipyard - 1982

Just looking on the BBC website, and saw this

'Changing face of UK' in aerial photos

http://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/collections/landscapehistories/1

Detailing a project that's been running from the University of Cambridge, taking hi-res aerial photos since the 40's, and they're busy putting the archives online. Had a quick look on the site, and on the very first page there are 8 pictures from '82 showing the Pallion yards and Queen Alex from 82. The quality is excellent...

the site is a bit slow, but bear with it

They are tremendous quality. Would explain why it's so slow.

some toppa pics, just had a neb at them on my phone, will have a proper look on laptop later.
in the first picture, look at the empty space behind castletown/hylton castle.i can vaguely remember it been like that:lol:

The next time someone asks why we don’t try to reintroduce shipbuilding to the Wear, I’m going to link this photograph and reiterate that there’s not the infrastructure in place and it’s not cost effective to do so. It’s a crying shame, but it’s a fact.

We just haven't got the space or economies of scale. Or the crap wages that China pay.

I worked at Pallion shipyard among others and left around that time.

16,000 employed in shipyards on the Wear when I started in 73 (what a year eh) 6,000 of them at Sunderland Shipbuilders where I worked.
