Outrage as police shoot dog abandoned in freezing temperatures

I'm a dog lover and hate seeing animals put to sleep, but listening to what has been said, sadly it seems like it was the best thing to do for the poor dog.

Would any of the outraged make this beast their family pet, if it were alive?

100% the correct decision. Well done the police.

Friend was caught up trying to get rescue help out for it - people from German Shepherd rescues had actually arrived on scene just as it was shot (the thinking is it wasn't GSD anyway but Caucasian Shepherd which I'd never heard of until now) so reputable rescue help HAD been arranged and just didn't have a chance to even try which is behind a lot of the outrage about it.

They took their time getting there. Incident last for 6 hours before it was shot. Not like it was a snap decision.

Just arriving as it was being shot? Sounds like something out of a fillum.

Mate of mine was in the army and dealt with war dogs.

Some were trained like police dogs and some were trained just to kill, to be let off the lead and pointed at the enemy.

He reckoned that people tried to rehabilitate the nutters sometimes, but once a dog is exposed to this sort of training and it gets that mentality it's a lost cause.
They were put down after active duty.

Sad I know but a dog that has lost it's mind could kill and they did spend time trying to calm it down to no avail.

Sad but necessary situation really.

HARTLEPOOL DOG SHOOTING WITNESS DESCRIBES TRYING TO HELP

Fury has been growing among animal lovers after an abandoned dog was killed by police officers.

The pet, described as an elderly German Shepherd, was found tied to a telegraph pole in freezing temperatures in a cold coastal town.

Cleveland Police were alerted to the incident in Mainsforth Terrace, Hartlepool, after being contacted by the council at around 10.07am on Sunday.

Witnesses have described how the dog was discovered in a “distressed” and “aggressive” state and officers were too scared to approach it.

An urgent appeal was made to trace the owner but no-one came forward.

There was a joint effort from the police alongside RSPCA and veterinary professionals to calm the dog down, but despite pleas from bystanders, a decision was made to destroy the animal.

Witness Ian Robson told the ChronicleLIVE how he tried to reason with police moments before they shot the animal dead.

He said: “I got a phone call from my wife saying to come down because there was a dog stranded.

“I came down to see if I could do something about it but I was told there was nothing that could be done and that police were about to shoot it.

“I suggested that they used tranquillisers to sedate it and calm it down because it was barking as people tried to feed it but they just kept saying it was an aggressive dog.

“And now they have gone and shot it which is bang out of order.”

Police shot the dog after it was decided it was dangerous and could not be approached. Armed police with the dog after it was shot.
The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with one Facebook user claiming it was “the easy option out”.

Another user questioned: “If the dog was tethered why did they need to sedate from a distance anyway?”

And a third commented: “I bet the poor dog was terrified tied to a tree with people all round him of course he was gona act aggressively [sic].”

A fourth user hit out at the person who left the dog tied to the pole, saying: “The blame ends there. If she wasn’t abandoned in this way there wouldn’t have been these consequences.”

However many agreed with the actions of the police. One Facebook user said: “As an ex-vet nurse this was 100% the right thing to do,”

“If you think for a moment a dog behaving like this would have suddenly turned loving and sedate when it woke up in a vets cage you haven’t been around many aggressive dogs.

“There’s a risk it hurts or attacks a member of staff, I certainly wouldn’t have wanted to risk being the guinea pig to see if it was different in a different situation.

“They had assessed it, it couldn’t be rehomed. So as sad as it is, it was best all round.”

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: “The decision to destroy the dog has not been taken lightly and this was the very last course of action that we wanted to take.

“All attempts to calm the dog failed. Vets advised that they were unable to sedate the dog due to not being able to approach it and not having equipment to sedate from a distance.

“Unfortunately, veterinary professionals advised that the dog could not be re-homed due to its aggressive behaviour.

“The decision taken, in conjunction with the RSPCA and veterinary professionals, was that the kindest thing to do for the dog would be to destroy it. This has been a difficult decision and one that we had hoped we wouldn’t have to make.”

In a statement on Facebook, the force said police received a call from Hartlepool Borough Council at 10.07am yesterday, “regarding what was described as an aggressive German Shepherd which had been left tied to a telegraph pole”.

“Despite hours of working together with partner agencies including the RSPCA, a re-homing charity and consultation with numerous veterinary professionals in order to calm the dog, the difficult decision was made to destroy it,” it said.

“The dog became increasingly aggressive as time went on. Attempts were made to find the owner, however, they were unsuccessful.”

They should have hunted down the Dog's owner and shot that **** instead
