Gross spend is what matters. This is the amount of money that he has gone through to build a squad that has utterly failed to compete at any decent level this season.

It's quite obviously not. If you've got ten goats and you sell nine for £10 each, you have to replace them. If he was only given £45 to replace them he'd be short-changed and it'd be underinvestment.

Honestly man, how much of a f***ing idiot do you have to be to use this as a stick to beat him with when there are so many lying about. You're missing a stupendous open goal.

The problem is the management of the resources, not the resources or the money he's been given to bring those resources in. It's obvious to anyone with an ounce of sense.

SB has spent at least £60m plus - gross - to buy players who he seemingly has a problem motivating and whose relegation worries are ended half a dozen games before the end of the season at home to Wigan Athletic.

Nothing, yet again in the cups, no european football, despite being very handily placed in January, all in all another grossly disappointing season from SAFC.

all talk and no action = SAFC.

People expect a lot better and Quinn has no complaints if people dont renew their ST. His "despise" comment was shameful.

What, for telling the truth? shameful that anyone would try and get someone else barred. are you some sort of snitch? Grass?

weren't we unbeaten against the big five up until January or summat, and unbeaten at home? That to me means that we competed at a decent level Until Bent got greedy and the injuries kicked in of course, but you can't account for the unaccountable.

Tell you what I think. I think that:

1. The chairman should stop telling people that he "despises" them,
2. Having spent tens of miillions of pounds the club should not be anywhere near relegation trouble
3. the club should stop blaming injuries for their shortcomings - they chose to have a small squad and have paid for that policy
4. SAFC should put a decent side out in the cups and know what - try to win a game.
5. stop talking a good game and actually deliver something - where it matters - on the pitch, not off it
6. when the owner next appears he might refrain from littering his utterances with the "relegation" word

...you know, things like that.....

Up until January doesnt count. What counts is where we are come May. what you can say though about January is that it was a total false dawn. The club, players - whoever - switched off - got complacent and now has us cock a hoop at beating Wigan.

We were 6th in January - we should have finished there, not 10th, 12th or wherever we do end up.

Another wasted season for SAFC - delivering nothing in particular. 10th is nowhere, 12th is nowhere, 6th might have been europe. Its certainly millions in prize money.

Yeah yeah and you have a obsession with being utterly boring and to be honest you are becoming a embarrassment to the fans of SAFC.

here bastad here.

Of course you cant be arsed with the rest because you have no answer. No one on here despises SAFC. What some of us arent happy with is this continual failure by SAFC when gifted opportunities. you may be happy to make an excuse for SAFC - I and others arent.

We should have done so much better this season and once more failed to dleiver.

We have no excuses. Not one.

It's a huge ask to finish 6th only a season after struggling against relegation, you want too much too soon and it's just not realistic.

Progress this season will be comfortably mid-table (8th - 12th) with a good Summer of players in and out. Sensible investment. Then next season look to finish upper mid-table, like around 8th and then progress the season after that to realistically push for Europe.

1.i can only assume he was referring to you
2. half the f***ing league is near relagtion as it is so tight its a freak season
3. the squad is short coz hes busy shipping the f***ing shite out and has to sometimes accept a offer when it comes along or they will just sit on there contracts takes time to replace people rome wasnt buit in a day
4.our priority due to squad size was the league not the cup this is set out at start of season am sure we will go for it next season
5. we are 6 points off 7th that is a hell of an achievement in 2 f***ing seasons! hes steady the ship while getting a better quality player in and not just filling the squad with shite for cover quality not quantity
6.your a f***ing hypocrit!
7.your deluded
8.u depress me
9.i dont no if you can be classed as a supporter as all you do is slag the club off
10.i could gan on forever here

you could have fooled me. i understand every one wanting something better for the club they support; i've just never got the impression your one of them people. you seem to be well happy with slagging everything off about SAFC. just don't understand it.

which is still in the PL, non?

A manager comes in and says "I'll need 3 years to build a team that will compete".
It doesn't happen.

Gone.

A new manager comes in ,generates a new wave of optimism and says" I'll need
3 years to build a team that will compete " and proceeds to dismantle the previous foundation.

Now at this stage I could copy and paste another 12-15 times to cover my
60 years ( can't be bothered to see how many since Alan Brown) but I wont.
Does anyone think they are clever enough to see the common denominator here.

There is an earlier post saying SB has said the same so we should give him till next year and then start the witch hunt. Now what if he's like every other manager we've had (and nearly every other club BTW ) and is wrong.....he's going to need 4 years or even 5.
I'm pretty good at maths and have worked out that ONE manager and 5 years is a lot better than TWO managers and 6 years .
Why not leave the manager alone ,let him make mistakes and hope he learns.
Sunderland Reserves are in the Cup Final this year but is there any of their players we'd have back? Not for me.
Although we now have better players by far we dont have a better team but the manager has to buy and try. Most of you wont remember the Bank of England team where we had the best 11 players but together they weren't a good Team.
It's not the point of signing better and better players;it's getting stars to work with workhorses and plodders to get a better team and get the right balance and this is only gfoing to happen if we give someone 5-6 years and maybe more if there's a bit of light there.

...you know, things like that.....

1) He said it once, to a very specific group if I recall.
2) Have you seen the league? 9 points between 8th and 18th. You know what it was last year? 31 points.
3) It's not an excuse but has certainly hit us. No strikers tends to fuck you up, as I'm sure you'd concede (well, actually, I'm not sure but that's par for the course).
4) We did put out a decent side, we just got beat. Not good and cause for complaint but not cause for lies.
5) Meh meh meh, vague hope that we all share but you were running out of anything concrete weren't you?
6) Um, OK. I'm sure that's the cause of our slump.

What self-indulgent tripe you speak.

the money has been well spent as we have got to a f***ing steady premier league team from relegation fodder is that not well worth 20 milion???????????? most teams spend that on 1 player these days uncase u havent noticed u cant replace over half a squad in 2 transfer windows!!! and when a offer comes in for a player u have been struggling to get rid of you have to accept it for the sake of getting rid of them or you could end up stuck with them like f***ing murphy and healy u seem to think he can just go out sell 15 players then buy 15 new ones the next day, complete joke mate i think you have a bout of depression or something

We were lucky to stay up two years ago, but that was because we didn't have a proper manager and those players were massively under-performing.

This ; Fulop, Bardsley, Davenport, Ferdinand, Collins, Whitehead, Tainio, Malbranque, Richardson, Leadbitter, Jones. (with Cisse on the bench) was the team against Chelsea on the last match of 2008/09 and should have been good enough to be comfortable. But, again, we saw the club's complacency put us under pressure.

You might think this is an unacceptable analysis of that situation, but I find it reasonable. So from that, I think it's an exaggeration to call us relegation-fodder, both positions now and then are dependent upon managerial choices. From that perspective and given the increase in the club's stature from being a second season Prem club, it's not unreasonable to expect growth, while several lower-end Prem clubs have become worse teams than they were then.

Actually aye, I think that Healy could have done some kind of a job. He barely played a game for the club and Bruce didn't even try to give him an opportunity. Murphy was shit and as much as I think he was a dreadful player, was he a huge amount less effective in the team than Elmo is now? There seems a close comparison there.

I definitely feel that if Bruce had man-managed McCartney and not ostracised him from the first team he could have done a job. We have all said that he always seemed fit at West Ham, if they got him playing why couldn't Bruce? He obviously didn't fancy Reid, but surely if he'd been managed properly, kept fit and motivated he could have done a job for us? The fact he didn't get on the pitch at the SoL against Newcastle tells it's own story about how Bruce intended to use him. However, people ignore this as they are conditioned to see Reid and McCartney as no use by them not being picked or utilised well over the year or so before their respective departures. If people see beyond their interpretation of Bruce's views and selection patterns you can surely see that the manager didn't do his job here and wasted resources? Then there's Jones whose sale was very debatable, but what was clear was that Bruce didn't fancy him and wanted him out asap.

As I've said; first and foremost he's there to get them playing.

Look at the first 11 he chose against Notts County; Bent, Gyan, Richardson, Malbranque and Ferdinand were all there. Reid played, so did Da Silva, Angerleri and Riveros (Bruce's buys). Surely those players are good enough on paper to beat Notts County? The team against West Ham in the league cup was pretty much the best 11.

The reason we lost those matches wasn't that he rested players, it was something else.I think that something else was that Bruce didn't get them motivated and organised properly, same as the Newcastle matches.I think he's lacking in the ability to do that and signing 25 of his own players won't change that.

As I said on my first post, it isn't about my expectations of where we'll finish. It's about my not seeing the best performances we are capable of on paper and progress on the pitch.Other teams may be shit (like Wigan, who were dreadful) but that isn't an excuse.

As someone once said, you're inebriated with the exuberance of your own verbosity. Your final sentence said it all.

Sounds like that doesn't it. I just hate repeating myself, which I seem to do very often.I do think it's true though, don't you?

I agreed with your last sentence, if that's what you mean.

If it's any comfort to you we all repeat ourselves on here. As the years roll on though most people tend to develop a more succinct style of delivery. ;)

sick of hearing it man fuck sake we are gonna have our highest finish for years stop f***ing moaning! the fans are obsessed with sacking people! whats to say the next guy will be a sucess! we were never gonna keep up our early form man, we played far above our ability and exceeded everyones expectations there is no way we could of kept it up and finished higher! why on earth people want a bloke sacked when we are 10th in the league is f***ing stupid forget the form and look at the table at end of season! The blip is over just enjoy the best team we have ever had!

Well said! I'm with you!
