Otto Kretschmer U boat captain

All the great commanders were on the German or Russian side.

Our lads and the yanks barely had a look in by comparison (and I'm in no way attempting to diminish the achievements of Monty, Eisenhower etc.)

The eastern front and the war in the Atlantic were epic for their longevity.

Marshall Zhukov was the daddy

Sank over a quarter of a million tons of British shipping in WW2

It is a misconception that U-boat crews mass murdered survivors of vessels they sank.

In fact me grandad from South Shields was a first mate on tankers during ww2 and was sank on occasion.
I remember as a kid him telling me, the subs would surface and help survivors with supplies etc.
He also said a U-boat Captain gave him his watch.

Imagine being on a large slow mostly unarmed ship in the middle of the ocean for days on end, knowing you could get sunk at any time.
And people moan today
