Onuoha desperate for permanent Sunderland switch

Nedum Onuoha is loving life so much at Sunderland that he is now prepared to sign a permanent deal at the Stadium of Light.
The on-loan defender admits he was sad to leave Manchester City last summer, 14 years after signing for his boyhood heroes as a 10-year-old schoolboy.
But such has been the transformation in his career this season – his team-mates have even christened him Diego after his sensational Maradona-style solo goal in the 3-0 demolition of Chelsea – that he wants to sign permanently for the Black Cats, if City decide he can leave.
And former England Under-21 star Onuoha admits that since his impressive run of games at right-back for Sunderland, and the international rise of Black Cats colleague Jordan Henderson, he has refocused his sights on winning a full England cap.

Onuoha explained: “It was difficult leaving City. In pre-season I didn’t think I was going to be in Roberto Mancini’s 25-man squad, so it was a case of staying and playing in the reserves or hopefully someone wanting you to be in their squad or side for the season.
“I did leave City with a heavy heart, because I never expected myself to leave to be honest.
“I’d been there so long, since I was 10, and I had the feeling I could be in the side.
“But I wasn’t – so you have the moment when you say, ‘You have to do this, you have to move on’. It was a sad time.
“Thankfully Sunderland came in and once they did it was a bit of a no-brainer.
“This is a new home for me, so I can’t complain at all. It has worked out very well.
“Steve Bruce put some faith in me and said that he wanted me to be a big part of his season. You can’t say no to that, can you?”

And Onuoha, who was tracked by tomorrow’s opponents Everton before his Sunderland switch, is very interested in putting down roots on Wearside. “Definitely,” he enthused. “If City were to sell me, this is definitely a place I would consider coming back to because I’m really enjoying it.
“A lot of the players here are of a similar age with similar ambitions, so it’s a great place to be.”

And Onuoha concedes that the England call-up for midfielder Henderson – four years his junior – has sharpened the international appetites of a Sunderland side who are now eyeing the European places.
He added: “Jordan’s call up can inspire everyone. From the start of the season he’s been playing very well.
“There’s been a lot of noise about him being selected for England and the proof is there that it’s possible. It shows if you’re playing at your best, who knows what can happen?’’

Ironically, Onuoha’s emergence as Sunderland right-back has helped team-mate Phil Bardsley start his international career for Scotland after switching to left-back.
Onuoha quipped: “You wouldn’t have thought that would you? I used to think he was from Salford!’’
And he is equally light-hearted about that ‘Diego’ nickname. “He was a great player, but he’s retired now – so are they saying I should retire?’’

Really does sound like we have great team spirit, hopefully when City sign Alves they will let us have Onuoha on the cheap.

Isnt that what they all say though

the actual quotes can look a bit non-commital - desperate to be away from City - but to where??

If City were to sell me, this is definitely a place I would consider coming back to because I’m really enjoying it.

Canny player, would honestly prefer a natural right back (hutton) but he's a nice replacement

I think that's it basically. He likes it here but he's still a City player until they say otherwise.

Really like Ned, best right back we have had in a long time. It's late so don't start with the Hutton arguement because I can't be arsed to get into how he's shite defensively

We should try to get him...more of that roy of the rovers shit he pulled against Chelsea and I'd be lovin' it.

for me Ned could be so much better going forward if he believed in himself abit more. The lad has some decent ball skills and can put in a decent cross but often looks reluctant to go forward and everytime he's interviewed seems to put himself down

I don't think he is shite defensively.

He has a decent cross on him from what i've seen so far. Could be very valuable if we can get him bombing down the wings

Great, the Alan Hutton wank club is out now
