He got very lucky mind. He was comfortably tackled but the ball was knocked into the defender and came back into his path. Mind, I guess you create that kind of luck when you drive at players directly.

Am I the only one that doesn’t think he’s pacey though?
He's got a funny running style but seems to cover ground pretty sharpish

Lovely lad, hes got a really weird walking style too, kind of bounces as he struts round the pitch.
Mentioned before on here hes very capable of getting stuck in too.
Hope he’s here years, was lovely with young fans yet again last night.

He got very lucky mind.

He gets the bounce of the ball quite a lot I think but some of that is down to his commitment and hard work getting into positions. He does seem a bit lucky at times but it’s consistent and you can see his ‘luck’ in most games. Most good players carry a bit of luck. Like a lot I’d like to see him in Honeyman’s role but If Ross won’t use him there he certainly hasn’t given any reason to lose the RB spot.

Don't think we can afford to lose him from right back.

Is this minor criticism a function of his inexperience playing RB?
It looks like it's become that, yeah

My original point was that it's not as cut and dried as saying he's better defensively than Matthews, but it's looking like one we'll have to agree to disagree on :)

He's a better defender, he's more tenacious and he's a bigger threat going forward. What does Matthews do better than O'Nien?

Matthews is more composed. Positionally better and reads the game better at RB. A lot of this comes with experience having played his whole career at a higher level as well as international and Champions League football. Our defence is less wide open when Matthews plays.

O’Nien is more tenacious but needs to be as he’s often caught out of position but this is because he does attack better. He should attack better though as it’s his natural position.

I think you are maybe forgetting whilst O’Nien has played well in most of his games at RB, Matthews was also a standout performer before his injury. We’ve been very fortunate that O’Nien has been able to play out of position at the standard he has though. This is largely down to his attitude.

O’Nien is just a young lad though and has a great attitude. He is already our most improved player and if he keeps going the way he is there’s no reason he can’t go on to be better in that role.

Personally, I’d like to see him in his preferred position because he causes so many problems for the opposition when he gets forward and having him back defending doesn’t allow him to get into those positions as often as he should.

Especially when Honeyman struggles so much in an advanced role. It’s better to have 2 players playing well in their best positions than 1 player playing well out of position.

He's been playing hellish at RB. I know it's tempting to say play him further up field and he's earned that, but matthews looked awful when he came back from injury. And I would say O'nein is our one shining light in the defence so wouldn't want to change it up too much.

My hero honeyman  how do you get this ?

It's not argumentative, it's offering opinion. Just cause I disagree and am putting my point across it doesn't mean I'm arguing.
Maybe because he's always man of the match to you even when he isn't playing. ;):)

Lucky and good, twice blessed.

I honestly don't know what you're on about. You've got me mixed up with another poster cause I'm not that much of a honeyman fan and have def never gave him man of the match.

When they scored their second he looked absolutely gutted. He cannot hide his desire to do well for SAFC and nor should he.An absolute breath of fresh air in the modern game, love having him around our club.Oh and good player as well..

Needs to be in midfield for me he causes trouble in oppositions box

Was good last night but gets caught defensive wise but that's not the lads fault as not a right back

We will be lucky to hang onto this lad the progress he's making but long may his form continue

Have you seen how hard he works when he is chasing as 'piggy in the middle' in training. He is like a dog chasing a ball, never gives up and eventually forces a mistake/turnover. Its no coincidence he gets the break of the ball so often as his recovery time is v impressive.

Am sure someone once quoted "the harder I practice, the luckier I get"

I said this a while back on another thread - he never gets wrong footed. His centre of balance seems to be down at his feet.

When he went on a run and skinned three players it looked effortless, this boy really is going to be hard to keep hold of, he is easily our best player.

Wins almost all his headers, even for his height he is good in the air.
He loves a challenge
He has the ability to break forward and cause problems in the box.
Loves the club to bits as his reactions prove when we concede and score!
He really would be an asset behind Grigg if Maguire is out on Sat but he is also a solid RB, hard choice for Ross.

Apologies marra must have you mixed up with another Joe. I'd definitely bench Honeyman and put Onien where he's most effective, attacking midfield.
