One Sunderland you wish you had never been at

Aye they did. Owers was sent off and we were hammered. 4-0 at half time IIRC.

A shocker of a night.

We had a lot down that night and the atmosphere was great until kick-off :-(

Apart from the mags home 1-4 defeat, boro was the last home game for me that season, just had enough of driving back, defeat after defeat

Got about £80 back on the vouchers i sold for home games, least i got something back, but a very small consolation

My very first Season ticket that year, I still got the bug. Fuck knows how.

5th round replay - League Cup 1990.

5-0 defeat against Coventry. The Lads forgot about the ball that night and spent 90mins trying to kick Speedie out of the ground.

I was at our next away defeat in the League Cup the season after. Derby 6 Sunderland 0. That was a shocker aswell. Harford got 3 or 4 I think.

Charlton at home, 3 own goals ........ we really had reached the depths then, lower for me than McMenemy dropping us into the third.

chelsea away 75-76 just before xmas lost 1-0 not many s/land their they were after us all day i was arrested along with 6 others and one of our lot took a bad hiding , had to return just after the new year for the court case to
be heard also not a good day

I was there.
When Chelsea scored half of the away end cheered. It was a big terraced end and everyone was spread around. Some of the red and white scarves turned out to be Arsenal who were after us.
Can't remember why.

The only good thing was when we were challenged by a Cockney with a knife and a Sunderland lad, with a full length leather coat, lamped him in the bollocks without looking away from the match or taking his hands out of his pockets :-D

Yeah mine too, I've always been optimistic watching Sunderland as we all are but that afternoon was a step too far. My misery was compound by the most ridiculous quote I've ever seen on MOTD by Howard Wilkinson, "I don't accept the inevitability of relegation - I genuinely think we will get out of it". I took a hip flask full of JD for the rest of the season, medicinal of course ;) Bless Micky Proctor though, he was unlucky to say the least!

On reflection, it was good to be at some of the games mentioned (7-1 Everton, 1-4 Newcastle, 3-1 Charlton, etc.) at least there is a certain 'badge of honour' for being there when something horrible happened. So for me it would be Highfield Road in 91, 0-0 and nothing happened for the entire 90 mins.

I remember an Arsenal game away in 2002 when we went 2:0 down in the first few minutes and everybody just said - shit ground, shit team, let's get pissed in Islington and left the ground.

I stayed, sitting in a nearly empty stand thinking I've paid a tonne of money here, I'm staying.

Mags at home 4-1
Pompey at home the same Season
Brentford away the same Season

There's a massive f***ing list from that season.

Had the pleasure of seeing those 3.

Remember losing 3-2 at home to Spurs (2002ish) after being 2-0 up in 13 minutes. Even Gary Doherty scored for them iirc.

anyone remember home game against derby under keane, won 1-0 when stokes scored, i know we won but what an awful game of 'football' !! at least we won

other games, mags at home 4-1, chelsea 7-2 :-(

Chelski away second time up under reidy. We had just pissed the championship playing the best football i had ever seen, going into that match i really thought we had a chance it was a big wake up call that im glad we got first game of the season.

Numerous games have left me scarred for life, but the main ones that spring to mind:-

Barnsley (away) MacPhail had a nightmare and was confronted in the carpark by a good few irate supporters...

Derby (away) under the new era of Terry Butcher...I left the ground speechless after we were torn apart by Marco and Co....

Southampton (home), where Paul Stewart played up front on his own...i've never been so annoyed at tactics from a Sunderland team in all my years....

I remeber at the time that game was f***ing huge for us too, and he went one uptop. I think whenever he did that in the rest of his time here people thought back to that game.

2001 mate I remember it well. Remember people leaving in the masses in the last few minutes, loads of people shouting "that's Europe gone Reidy", depressing

Bradford at home something like 2001/02. Finish 0-1 John Dreyer scored iirc, f***ing gash

if that was the easter bank hol couple of days after winning down at sheff wed with phillips getting 2 in last 5 mins then im with you,

really thought we were gonna get a european spot after winning at sheff wed, had a great holiday weekend til then, knew after that game that we would fall short

that and probably the charlton own goal game
